This week we heard about two shocking celebrity suicides from people the public dearly loves and who are considered epitomes of American success stories. Add to these the 123 suicides that stunningly occur every day within the United States, and we have to know that something is very wrong with our culture.

We prioritize success. Over peace. And tools for peace. Instead, we customize ourselves and our children to reflex to  anger, pain, judgment, medications and law suits.  We do not teach in our schools or within our homes what it means to develop tools to be able to be present within ourselves, and to manage ourselves emotionally when suffering slams against our door.

We pathologize life and tell people who are depressed that they need therapy. When we have to take a look at how we live. The beat of our culture is producing a suicidal rhythm. We are prioritizing things that don’t ensure peace and ignore tools that anchor the soul.

Our lives can change so quickly. For good or for bad. We leave our own marks, here and there, on life. In return, life leaves marks, here and there, on us. Some are beautiful. Some hurt like hell.

But learning what runs us, that which we don’t know runs us, is the wise portal to making suffering a smaller font size.

Some hurts get velcroed. They make up our pain body. Dr. Berkson discusses her own bout lately with her own pain body. And shares the lessons.

The more we know what is going on, within us, the less these run us and the more we can manage our emotions.

Why do we prioritize math over tools for the quiet mind?

Talking, not texting, out loud, asking questions, dealing with suffering, all work to help each other feel better inside ourselves. Silence doesn’t.

Need a suicide number? Call 800 273 8255

And did you know, there are meds today that can decrease suicidal thoughts within 30 minutes, like nasal spray ketamine.

There is much that can be done in both the short and long term within our soul’s crevices. When bleeding, you go to the ER. And mental suffering is the chest pain of the mind. It demands attention. But lives focused on productivity and success don’t have time for that attention.

The earlier we encourage our children to develop tools to know themselves and want to authentically know others, and mirror this to them, the better for all of us.

When do we encourage children to know how to have a quiet and powerful relationship with themselves? Not just great grades. And speak about emotional management. And discussing what lies deep within that’s got us that we don’t know has got us?

In today’s society we give feelings such power. But they are only feelings. They come and go. If we learn to surf them for what they are, we are less their victims.

We all have within us the will to live and the will to die.

We have more will to live when we are less “identified” with our feelings.

And more with a sense of deep personal congruency.

That does not come from things.

Loneliness is bad for the spirit and our culture and our planet.

It has nothing to do with mailing list in your business account.

It has everything to do with your personal relationship with yourself.

And reaching out in a most real and human way.

Dr. Berkson shares examples of cases in which patients lives were improved and changed by looking at their condition with a new set of functional medicine eyes.

You will learn about a rare cause of insomnia, called “nocturnal hypertension.”

You will be amazed that one cause of idiopathic infertility may be subclinical hypothyroidism, even if your TSH thyroid blood test is still within normal range.

Did you know that sperm count and shape can “say” a lot about a man’s heath, even his risk for metabolic disease?

You will learn about the concept of “hormonal hyper-excreters” and how it can make some folks seem to fail with hormone replacement, when it is not the hormonal therapy that’s the issue.

You may want to get Dr. Berkson’s Safe Hormones, Smart Women, in book or audio form, to learn more.

How many of us really know ourselves? What runs us that we don’t realize runs us? Have we worked out our demons and learned not to abandon ourselves? Is our inner gut calm or in a state of secret chronic terror? This interview is a delicious and incredibly “calming conversation” about the mysteries of finding livable peace in today’s crazy, cacophonous world.

Want to feel calm. Want an antidote to stress? This interview between Dr. Berkson and Dr. Javed, is YOUR answer.

Dr. Qazi Javed is a double board certified integrative medical physician who got out of school and in his first job saw 30 patients a day, soon realizing this wasn’t fair to either his patients or himself. There had to be another effective way to help others manage their emotions and lives. And to do so without traumatizing each other trying to accomplish healing in 15-minute increments.

Today, Dr. Javed combines orthodox psychiatry with psychotherapy, orthomolecular medicine, nutrition, herbalism, and mind-body approaches.

  • The emphasis is on authenticity.
  • And calm.
  • The focus is “realness” between his patient and himself.
  • Then helping the patient gain this within their own lives.
  • This takes time, commitment, and a doctor that has your priority as his priority. How refreshing. Pretty rare in today’s speedy money and externally oriented culture.

Dr. Javed believes in the value of “connections” in creating and enhancing overall well-being. As humans we have connections both with ourselves and with the world outside ourselves. “Disharmony” in any of these connections causes suffering. “Harmony” between these connections, opens the possibilities for life without pain. A life with room for calm.

Experiencing these concepts unfold in our own mind, actions and relationships, opens portals for healing. And lays the groundwork for sustainable peace.

This is a perfect Mother’s Day podcast. This show is about a “never-giving-up mom on rhoids”—JJ Virgin.

JJ Virgin’s son was in a serious accident and endured an extremely severe head trauma. Her son Grant was literally fighting for his life. The doctors declared there was hardly any chance of surviving let alone his ever being “normal” again.

JJ does not give-up. She dug deep and in this riveting interview you hear how she did that. JJ describes how she creates hope inside herself, when there doesn’t seem to be any. You will hear the exact nutraceuticals and natural protocols she and her finally willing doctor used to heal this un-healable brain catastrophe.

Taking her son from the brink of death with high dose fish oil, hormones, and energy modalities, inspired a new movement toward identifying and resolving brain injuries. Especially in children and teens.

JJ is not new to having courage or stunning success. She is a celebrity nutritionist, fitness adviser, public speaker, and media personality. She’s been a regular on high-profile shows like Dr. Oz, Dr. Phil, the TODAY show, Access Hollywood and more.

. JJ has an amazing talent for “inspiring mindsets that birth miracles”  and then providing tools that then nudge these miracles to multiply.

JJ is known for her amazing buffed bare arms  and for decades she has taught clients how to lose weight and master their mindset to help them maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Currently JJ’s brain child—Mind Share, which is where I met JJ for the first time—focuses on the functional medicine community online. This is an exciting networking group of diverse health professionals from MDs to health coaches, that help each other get their word and products out into the world.

I know you will be inspired and moved hearing JJ’s story of determination, resilience and mama warrior courage.

Today’s show is more outside of “traditional” science than usual, but it is an area where more and more research is being done. Neurosurgeon Dr. Norm Shealy takes this episode from the beginning of classical methods of treating pain, depression, and diseases to atypical but contemporized methods that include energy medicine, nutrition, hormones and even mysticism!

When Dr. Shealy first graduated Duke University School of Medicine, pain management wasentirely surgical. If you had back pain you got surgery. However surgery only reduced back pain about 10% of the time. If it failed and you had more pain after the surgery, your life was basically ruined.

So Dr. Shealy added “energy” to the mix. Dr. Shealy did this by substituting “cutting” surgery with implanting electro- spinal signals into the spinal column, which delivered energy signals to effectively reduce pain without major cutting. Dr. Shealy then invented a next generation of the Tens unit (first invented by a chiropractor and then a naturopath but brought to market by the Shealy Tens) to deliver energy signals to also reduce pain.

Dr. Shealy then took “energy medicine” further.  Dr. Shealy founded and ran the only energy-treatmenthospital wing, which functioned for 30 years, addressing pain, depression and obesity with energetic-related treatments. This hospital wing and Dr. S’s present clinic have treated over 30,000 patients with natural energy and nutritional answers. These alternative treatments have achieved 85% cure rates, compared to less effectiveness rates for conventional surgical and pharmaceutical interventions.

Dr. Shealy holds 13 medical patents, 312 publications, andhas authored 23 books. His first major public book,90 DAYS TO SELF-HEALTHsold 130,000 copies. In 1966 Dr. Shealy became Chief of Neurosciences at Gundersen Clinic, one of the 10 largest clinics in the United States.

Dr. Shealy forged ahead to take energy medicine further. In this show you will learn about copper, biogenics, clearing past life “thread” and spirituality. Dr. Shealy also founded the non-profit Holos Institutes of Health, Inc., an organization for research and education that focuses on energy, hormones, nutrition and mysticism.

Dr. Shealy has been instrumental in initiating a new path for psychologists. It's a program called “conscientious psychology” that combines psychology, nutrition and spirituality. Dr. S. has donated 346 acres and millions of dollars to support a university to make this program available to students world-wide.

Other firsts:

  • Shealy discovered four unique techniques for helping the human body make more of the critical hormone, DHEA, without “taking hormone replacement”.
  • Shealy co-founded with Caroline Myss, the American Board for Scientific Medical Intuition. He has moved the “science of medical intuition” forward, and trained notable “medical intuitives” such as the amazing Caroline Myss herself (she helped me greatly when I was first diagnosed with breast cancer). In this show you learn what medical intuition is and who can it help.

Dr. Shealy has appeared on numerous national TV programs, including Oprah, The Tomorrow Show, The Joan Rivers program, Geraldo, Good Morning America, The Today Show, and the Wisdom Channel.

In this show you get to hear a simply astonishing conversation between Dr. Shealy and Dr. Berkson about how we can all learn how to “detach”, “relax” and “heal” often without meds or surgery.

Some people say no pain no gain but is that true for severe physical pain?

Why be in horrific physical pain if healthy natural answers exist to set you free?

Surgery options? Many fusions cause downstream pain and dysfunction issues. The fused area looses motion, which, within months or years after surgery, puts increased movement demands on the joints areas above and below to pick up some of the motion slack.

Pain? If you develop severe back or leg pain after a back surgery, this often signals a serious long-term hard-to-treat scenario.

Thus, faster, safer and easier methods to deal with disc surgery, are needed. In this show you will learn what they are.

Dr. Bleiweiss is one of two medical surgeons in the U.S. that performs Oxygen Ozone Disc Injection Therapy. You’ll learn the multiple benefits of ozone disc therapy, how it compares to conventional treatments, and who is and is not a candidate for this intervention.

I asked Dr. Bleiweiss why are there only two physicians in the U.S. doing this procedure if it is so beneficial and safe.

Listen to this show to find out the answer.

Who is this doc? Dr. Bleiweiss, M.D. is a diplomat of the American Board of Anesthesiology, a diplomat of the American Board of Pain Medicine, and a diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners. He is board certified in New York, has been in practice for over 30 years and has been doing this unique ozone/disc therapy for 8 years.

Dr. Bleiweiss specializes in minimally invasive alternative treatments that heal patients without surgery or potentially harmful medications.  His treatment are specifically designed to activate the body’s innate ability to recover and regenerate.

If you have suffered with severe back pain, or had dear friends or family members affected you will want to learn:

  • What is the safest way to severe herniated disc syndrome with on-going pain?
  • How does this compare to conventional treatments?
  • Who is and who is not a candidate?
  • Why aren’t many surgeons doing these techniques in the good ole USA?
  • How quickly does a patient get pain free?
  • What other pain conditions and injuries can oxygen ozone injection therapy treat successfully?
  • What are the main reasons people should try this therapy instead of opting for surgery?
  • Real patient examples.

Most Americans think that FDA regulations protect them from harm.

Sadly, this is rarely— if ever—the case. Dr. Mary Ruwart explains that more FDA regulation has actually caused more expensive drugs and increased premature deaths.

Our FDA system is shockingly set up to keep drugs at higher costs while preventing citizens from learning about safer, natural answers.

How did this happen? Dr. Ruwart shares exactly how the “1962 Amendments to the Food & Drug Act”—that were supposed to protect us from harm—have done the opposite.

In this imperative talk you learn the dark details, and on the other hand, you also gain positive, protective actions that you and your family can take immediately.

Dr. Mary J. Ruwart is a pharmaceutical research scientist, ethicist, and a libertarian author/activist. She has been a participant in Congress and was a runner-up for the U.S. presidency on the Libertarian ticket.

Dr. Ruwart’s been a guest on The Larry King Radio Show; The Morton Downey, Jr. Show; Rolanda, and more.

In this show you will hear probiotics myths explored and busted with microbiologist Kiran Krishnan. You will discover the “mucosal system” and what this has to do with protecting your health.

Kiran and Berkson discuss:

  • Probiotic myths — explored and busted.
  • Differences between “live” and “dead” probiotics.
  • What are “spores”,
  • Do you need to refrigerate probiotics?
  • What are “gut model studies” and why are they critical?
  • How esophageal reflux is linked to downstream intestinal gases from pathogenic overgrowth
  • What you should expect from a great probiotic.

You learn that bacterial translocation (leaky gut) occurs in most of us after most meals but in a very small amount for a very short period of time. This is normal.

In contrast, in disease states or with poor dietary choices, bacterial translocation (also referred to as metabolic endotoxemia) can occur for pathologically longer times, creating inflammatory havoc throughout the body.

A human randomized trial by researchers from the University of North Texas published in World Journal of Gastrointestinal Pathophysiology demonstrated, in seventy-five healthy college students, that this dangerous “leaky gut” scenario can continue for up to two weeks after consuming only ONE junk food meal!

These researchers further demonstrated that consuming “spore” probiotics for a month, at the same time as consuming junk food meals like fast food burgers and fries (citation below), significantly reduced leaky gut. Spores also normalized triglyceride levels and reduced overall systemic inflammation.

At the show’s end, Dr. Berkson and Kiran joke that their conversation was so thrilling, perhaps they should share metaphoric cigarettes? This is an agile conversation that definitely weaves science with comedy.

Kiran Krishnan is a research microbiologist and expert on metabolic endotoxemia. He’s a frequent lecturer on the Human Microbiome at medical and nutritional conferences — https://microbiomelabs.com/webinars/

Kiran also conducts a monthly Microbiome Series Webinar and is on advisory positions at the following companies:

How might women get a bad rap in medicine and what you might do about it?

Dr. Berkson and Sellma Vllasi, FNP-C, practiced in the same family medicine clinic for 6 years and still share many patients. Vllasi is an integrative and functional medicine nurse practitioner, team leader of the Wiseman Family Practice (in charge of provider education) and previously was a labor and delivery nurse for eight years.

Today’s show explores:

  1. Gender bias and differences in medicine (from diagnosis to treatment and insurance reimbursement)
  2. Gender differences in provider’s perceptions
  3. Women are often taken less seriously
  4. Women are often recommended aggressive prophylactic procedures (such as hysterectomy and bilateral mastectomy) but this is not the case for males even though males have a high incidence of prostate cancer, plus the rate of breast cancer in males is rapidly increasing) and men can get BRCA genetic glitches, too.
  5. When data came out in 2012 that testosterone therapy during prostate cancer treatment is protective, urologists jumped on giving T therapy to males. This has not been the case with females.

Female breast cancer patients often have not heard or been given the option of taking T therapy with tamoxifen or aromatase inhibitors to improve their quality of life and safety profiles.

  1. Women must create an advocacy team with agile thinkers.
  2. Women must learn how to become more self-aware and trust themselves more. In this show you hear a few steps toward achieving this.

Romantic lovewe can’t live with it and we can’t live without it.

As humans we are very open both to great love and to great sorrow. We are built for monogamous love as well as for cheating. How we straddle the enormous divide between the drive to mate and the drive for independence varies with each of us, influenced by societal norms and even public health issues, like the hormone-altering-chemicals found in plastics and heavy metals. Is the drive to love so deeply wired that it’s safe from outside toxicities, or might environmental pollution be changing our brains and thus our ability to love?

  • Why is the drive to love so strong?
  • Where does romantic love “live” inside our brains?
  • How do we pick the "right one"?
  • Once we find love, how do we make it stay?
Feb 27, 2018

Berkson tackles the rise of anger and violence in America: the debates, the second amendment controversies, the consensus, why we haven’t heard from the CDC and the surgeon general, and what might junk food and ‘hormone altering chemicals' have to do with it?

This is a riveting and heartfelt dialogue that needs to be heard, pondered and shared.

Funky Food; fermented & predigested options with healthy food strategies with Sarica Cernohous. She is a Traditional Chinese Medical Doctor, Wellness Strategist and best selling author of The Funky Kitchen, and its accompanying online course, “Fresh, Fun and Flavorful in The Funky Kitchen.”

Sarica guides people toward developing an enhanced and individualized understanding of how to eat in harmony with their constitution (body/mind/spiritual makeup) and to stay well or get well from disease and stress.

Sarica and Dr. Berkson engage in a lively discussion on what is fermented food, what is “authentic” or “fake” fermented food. How today’s wine and beer are different than hundreds of years ago. What fermentation does to proteins, carbs and food structure and why this makes a huge difference in health and allergenic load.

They discuss how not eating in-between meals is a huge healing habit, yet most Americans “nosh” themselves into excess calories, obesity, disease and dementia.

Sarica and Dr. B go into depth about candida organisms. We discuss the different states when candida is in harmony with us versus at war with us. We discuss eating to “humanize” ourselves, rather than promote dehumanizing ourselves.

The American cultural is addicted to excess. If a little is good, then more is better. This addiction to excess even applies to smoothies. We discuss why more food simplicity is critical for us all, adults and young kids alike.

Turns out that eating food is part of good food hygiene. Not eating food for long enough is also part of it. We usually don’t look at food from this critical perspective.

S and Dr. B debate bone broth, which growing in use so much, it is getting neck-and-neck with coffee as an American beverage. Yet, bone broth has both light and shadow sides. You’ll learn about these.

Berkson shares her in-depth Kimchi whore house experience, and if you don’t laugh till your cry, you must already be on to your next incarnation.  If you write Berkson, you can get this famous, healthy and tasty recipe (info@drlindseyberkson.com).

You’ll also learn: How to use a Snapple bottle top to help promote healthier circulation and promote body/mind integration, through upping “Gua sha” — and why should you care, what is “predigestion” and how do traditional fermented foods play a role in chronic disease, how much fermented food is healthy to eat, how to take baby steps if you are just beginning to clean up your diet and consume fermented foods, what are the “real” and “non-real” sour dough’s, what should labels say to tell you what’s good for your gut or if the food is truly fermented, which fermented foods—like sauerkraut—should you never eat and where do they “live” in grocery stores, and why isn’t this information widely discussed if it’s so important?

You will be pretty stunned to learn that almost everybody has some degree of “leaky gut” after most meals, but the issue is the degree. This natural phenomena, that drives nourishment into our blood stream so the gut wall has to open up to a certain degree, is scientifically called “post-prandial bacterial translocation” and sometimes it’s good and sometimes it’s bad.  Fermented foods can reduce the “bad” version.

PS: Gua Sha means "scraping till you create bruising" and is a traditional Chinese medical treatment in which the skin is scraped to create light bruising which stimulates blood flow and healing. Best news, you can do this on yourself or your loved ones. The benefits, according to Sarica, are pretty instantaneous.

Dush Ramachandran is a business transformation coach who grows companies from $50 to $350 million for everyday folks to have supreme business health and make their dreams come true.

Dush’s podcast the “Entrepreneur Effect” is one of the most watched and respected shows on line. It guides solo businesses to know how to succeed. This show has 400,000 listeners every single month!

Dush is President & CEO of a business, The Net Momentum Corp that helps people launch their products and companies.

In this show, Dush discusses how he helps businesses, books and online courses soar. Everything is moving to the web, okay, maybe not surgery. But a lot.

But this ability for the net to help us soar is this week under attack.

We have been enjoying the “Democratization of Media.” If you wanted to attain media reach even 15 years ago, you would have had to own a T.V. station, a radio station, a newspaper, or a film production company. Today with YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Word Press, and Pinterest (and some interesting content), you could easily gain worldwide reach with a large number of followers.

These platforms have leveled the playing field for entrepreneurs.

They can now have an online presence similar to that of multi-billion-dollar corporations, with some effort and very little money. Now that’s exciting!

But this week, “Net Neutrality” is being voted on by the FCC to try to give more business speed and oomph to the larger and richer players, like phone and cable companies. And elbow the little business out.

Dush helps us surf whatever the business “is-ness” is, so we can make supreme business health a reality. Learn how Dush, an ex-VP of Business Development at the largest online marketplace of digital products, Click Bank, now helps regular folks become extraordinary.

And Dush has the background and skills to do it. When Dush was with Click Bank, he helped grow the company’s revenues nearly 500% in five years.

Its one thing to have a dream to invent, create, write or have a voice, but it’s another a whole other world letting the world know about it. And get them to buy it.

Dush helps your dreams become win/wins.

With the FCC wanting to change “net neutrality”, this could change your ability to make your dreams come true.  Call your representatives and let them know your concerns. Today!

Dush gives us sound advice.

Every entrepreneur needs a plan.  Always start with a plan, even if it is sketched out on a scrap of paper. Dush remembers sketching the plan for a $200 million deal he did for one of my companies on a beer coaster in a pub in Germany. The terms for the sale of one of his companies was written up on a sheet of lined paper and exchanged with the buyers. Simply writing things down can make a plan so much clearer. I’m always telling my Net Momentum clients to write down their plans, no matter how simple they may appear.

With the Baby Boomer generation growing older, the largest generation ever is now settling down and changing our very concept of aging. This generation has participated in incredible wealth creation. More wealth has been created in the last 60 years than in all of history before that time. Opportunities to serve this demographic are huge.

Any idea that gives Boomers greater convenience and control over their lives will be hugely successful.

Dush’s favorite online tool for you to know about: Google Trends.

Google Trends tells us what people are searching for and where searches for each of these terms originate. You can even compare search volumes for two similar terms (e.g., BMW vs. Mercedes) and the impact of a news item on the search. There is nothing that pinpoints our zeitgeist like this tool.

Three people Dush suggests you should follow on Twitter.

Brendon Burchard, because he is one of the most ethical marketers out there.
Guy Kawasaki for his trenchant views on the venture capital industry.
Will Ferrell because he’s one of the funniest comedians of our generation.

When Dush isn’t helping your business, he’s pushing the limits on a motorcycle in the mountains of Colorado.

“Home Air” is more critical to your health than community air. So, the “bad” news is: your “home” is where your worse air pollution might lurk. But your “good” news is: since it’s your own home (even if it’s an apartment), you can take action to protect yourself and those you love. But you have to know the problem, how to assess it and what to do about it. That is what this show is stunningly about.

Terry Wright, with an environmental science background and in this business for 35 years, discusses how important home air quality is to keep you well or get your well once you are ill. This includes diverse health issues from infertility to cognition and from dermatologic issues to your child’s academic capabilities.

Unhealthy air in your home can get “seeded” from your attic, a moldy basement, or from dampness hidden under a sink. Unhealthy home air has been linked to infertility, ADHD, brain fog, dementia, severe fatigue, lung issues and more.

We think that the small air filters we buy from the grocery store every several months (ha) protects what we inhale 24/7. But that is not necessarily the case. Nor is purchasing new furnaces with UV light purifiers. The facts surrounding home air quality are not known by many, yet are so vastly influential on our health.

Today, many of us are trying to eat better, work out more and perhaps even sit less. But who knew that the air you breathe while you sleep and hang out at home, is vastly critical to well being. You know I also add to the healthy to-do list… hormonal health. This is because hormones dictate our physiologic Internet system. But air is constant. It’s powerful. And home air quality can often go south and contribute amazingly to your un-wellness. And all this can be unfolding without any awareness on your part or even your doctor’ part.

Once you hear this show, you will want to go to www.pureairdoctor.com and sleuth around. If you decide to purchase an air consultation, or any products, when you put in Dr. Berkson’s code, 247, you get a 10% discount, and will not be charged for taxes or shipping.

An amazingly unique and helpful service, is that Mr. Wright will chat for free for 5 to 10 minutes when you first call (Toll Free # 800.234.6399). Then you can choose to set up an in-home consult via Skype.

Mr. Wright will look, via Skype, at your attic, under your sinks, and all through your casa. From his rich expertise of what to do to ensure high quality air free of mold, mycotoxins, heavy metals, and toxic dust and on and on, Mr. Wright will discuss his assessment and your options.

The list of what to do to stay well and get-well keeps enlarging. Now you need to add home air quality at the top of that set of to-do bullets.

Food Mood & Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving statistics:

The very 1st Thanksgiving Day occurred in the year 1621. It was a three-day festival held by pilgrims celebrating their blessings of the harvest. They invited Indians. Indians donated five deer, so venison was on the dinner table menu, and there wasn’t any turkey. There were also no pumpkin pies or potatoes as they hadn’t yet been introduced into the New England landscape. No one planned on this grateful feast creating an annual tradition.

1789. President George Washington announced the first Thanksgiving holiday, but it didn’t yet become an annual holiday until the 19th C. How did that happen? The American poet, Sarah Josepha Buell Hale, who is famous for  writing the nursery rhyme "Mary Had a Little Lamb" is responsible. She had the vision of an annual Thanksgiving American holiday. But to make it so, she campaigned, wrote and cajoled, for 30 years, for the creation of the American holiday known as Thanksgiving to come to be.

Sarah also created the foods we have come to know as part of this holiday, such as roasted turkey and pumpkin pies. She created and published these recipes that are famous for being cooked in Thanksgiving kitchens.

1863. In the midst of the civil war President Lincoln made Thanksgiving an official yearly holiday. He proclaimed it to occur on the last Thursday of each November.

1939. President franklin D. Roosevelt moved Thanksgiving to one week earlier to help small business owners make more money during the challenging Depression times.

1989. President George Bush granted the first official pardon to a turkey sending them to retirement on a farm rather than for dinner on the table. Many presidents continue to pardon turkeys. Did you know that?

Thanksgiving is a national holiday celebrated in Canada, the United States, some of the Caribbean islands, and Liberia but often on different dates than it’s celebrated in the US.

We equate Thanksgiving with food.

Great food.

And a lot of it.

As fate would have it, Thanksgiving this year (2017) overlaps with my dear colleague Kiran Ram’s amazing Food and Mood Project. So I decided to do a show and write a blog on food and mood.

Robert Ritch, MD, FACS Glaucoma pearls from the world’s expert. 10.28.17

It used to be said the one of the biggest fears of many is public speaking. But now as humanity is living longer than ever, the hugest terrors are the fear of going blind.

Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. But it is greatly misunderstood. It is actually a large number of illnesses, some of the of the eye, and some of them systemic.

Dr. Robert Ritch is a leading glaucoma expert. Dr. Ritch has developed many procedures now in place by glaucoma specialists around the world. He has also defined exfoliation syndrome, which he says many eye doctors are not adequately trained to identify.

Dr. Ritch says that any cogent physician, reading and understanding the literature, must embrace nutritional intervention as much as procedures and medications.

There are diverse forms of glaucoma. Some are eye diseases and some are brain diseases. Some affect mostly the eye site, others affect vulnerability to other diseases.

High-pressure glaucoma is an “eye disease” that makes the internal eye pressure of the eye elevate (intraocular pressure) causing optic nerve damage.

Normal or low-pressure glaucoma is more often a “systemic disease”. It occurs more frequently in thinner women with various attributes: astute sense of smell, tendency to low blood pressure, cold extremities, driven personalities, and tendency to various cardiovascular disease issues that do not necessarily shorten their life span.

Exfoliation syndrome is when pigment comes off (exfoliates) from the iris. The iris gives your eye its color. Blue eyes come from an iris with bluish pigment.

Your iris helps control the diameter and size of the pupil and thus the amount of light reaching your retina. When pigment sloughs off from the iris, it can clog the ability of the eye to drain. Fluid builds up. This increases the inner eye pressure and ultimate can start to damage the optic nerve.

The optic nerve is part of the brain. As it damages, you can loose vision. This is called visual field damage.

·      High-pressure glaucoma is an eye disease secondary to elevated eye pressure.

·      Normal or low-pressure glaucoma are diseases of the optic nerve that can’t withstand pressure variations or elevations, and often involve brain and whole body health.

Transforming growth factor beta1 (TGFB1) is a protein, called a cytokine, that when elevated, can promote dangerous inflammatory changes, especially within the eye. There are a large body of peer review published data linking elevated TFGB1 to open angle normal pressure glaucoma.

TGFB1 is elevated in both normal pressure glaucoma and exfoliation syndrome patients. It is not often elevated in high-pressure glaucoma. Specific nutrients and herbs have been shown, in peer review science, to normalize TGFB1 levels. When is eye damage the worse? The worst window for eye damage is potentially during the night. Blood pressure tends to lower slightly in all health people as we sleep. But if blood pressure goes too low, or there is sleep apnea present, the eye pressure moves in the opposite direction and dangerously elevates. If this happens, eye damage can be relentless while you sleep.

If you have normal or low tension glaucoma, to avoid nocturnal eye damage, raising the head of the bed by 20% (you can buy sleeping wedges at Bed Bath & Beyond), salt loading before bed with a glass of tomato juice, improve sleep apnea with machines, all which can reduce eye damage while you sleep.

Nocturnal eye damage can be to the optic nerve or to other structures of the eye. It is not limited to the optic nerve. Not many doctors, even eye or sleep doctors, are aware of the huge link between sleeping and eye health.

Sleeping on one side may enhance optic nerve damage in the eye on that side, in glaucoma patients.  It’s a good idea for glaucoma patients or high risk patients, to train themselves to sleep on their back.

Nutrients are a must. Dr. Ritch recommends many nutrients such as pigments from flowers that help preserve eye structure thickness, Meriva turmeric, Gingko Biloba, specific minerals like zinc and magnesium, citicholine oil (Italian studies on humans with eye drops with this show reversal of visual field damage but only supplements of this are available in the US), fish oils, and much more.

Nutritional shocking back copy. Dr. Ritch explains how nutrition originally got vilified in medicine (Morris Fishbein was head of the AMA and editor of NEJM for years, and based on greed changed the course of medical history) and it’s a fascinating and sad story.

Dr. Berkson wrote this up in depth in her blog on how health care lost its way. Check it out here: https://drlindseyberkson.com/losing-care-healthcare-medicine-lost-way-especially-regarding-natural-answers-diseases/

Micro-stents. When a glaucoma patient gets cataract surgery, the FDA has approved the placement of micro-stents to stabilize the damaging ups and downs of pressure in the eye. This procedure is reimbursable by Medicare. When a stent is placed at the same time as getting a new lens, then you cannot get corrective laser eye procedures.

This show is a rare opportunity to hear about eye health with a focus on glaucoma from a physician that treats kings and presidents all around the world.

Dr. Robert Ritch holds the Shelley and Steven Einhorn Distinguished Chair in Ophthalmology and is Surgeon Director Emeritus and Chief of Glaucoma Services at the New York Eye & Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai, New York City and Professor of Ophthalmology. When still a fellow in 1978, he performed the first laser iridotomy in New York and initiated the first course on laser treatment of glaucoma at the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He is a world leader in exfoliation syndrome, which affects 80 million people, and has started a global consortium to work on preventing, reversing, and even curing this disease.

Dr. Ritch has co-authored or edited nine textbooks and over 1800 medical and scientific papers, book chapters, articles and abstracts. He has presented over 750 lectures worldwide, including 50 named lectures and has received over 60 national and international awards and medals.

In 1985, he founded the Glaucoma Foundation and has served as Secretary, Medical Director, and Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board. In 1994, he initiated the annual Optic Nerve Rescue and Regeneration Think Tank, which has attracted numerous successful researchers from other fields into glaucoma research.
