Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome is an epidemic happening to teen and college age young women. It is a bit like having parts of menopause extremely prematurely. PCOS is a systemic illness that puts the body into an insulin resistant state. It is partially often treated with birth control pills, that are often part of the “perfect storm” cause.

Dr. Felice Gersh, a double board certified OBGYN and Integrative physician, is passionate about spreading the word. Too many gynecologists, endocrinologists and even integrative therapists do not understand the cause or the best natural answers.

In this show YOU will learn:

  • What is PCOS.
  • Why PCOS is on the rise.
  • Why we need “SOS” for PCOS.
  • What are the causes
  • What are effective long-term natural answers.
  • Why the “Pill” is not a good long-term answer
  • And more.

—Dr. F. Gersh - private practice in Irvine, California.

—PCOS SOS: A Gynecologist's Lifeline to Naturally Restore Your Rhythms, Hormones, and Happiness  by Dr. Felice Gersh

Feb 28, 2019

This exciting and factoid packed show is a true meeting of the minds and hearts of two docs that have spent their lives studying hormones every which way. You can’t help but hear loud and clear their passion for keeping women around the world safe. In this show Dr. Felice Gersh tackles mammograms and birth control pills.

Dr. Gersh has a brick and mortar practice in Irvine, California. She writes, is an investigative researcher, forensic expert witness plus regularly sees patients.

Dr. Gersh explains the pitfalls of mammography and the ups and downs of ultra sound.

While doing the interview Dr. Gersh texted Dr. Berkson, “Are you my long lost cousin, we’re two peas in a pod. Your “voice” is so like mine on science, hormone-altering-chemicals and hormones, I was floored.”

In this show you will hear explored:

  • Mammograms, the truth about whether they save lives or not.
  • What is ionizing radiation and how it both saves and/or causes cancer.
  • Should women be given “informed consent” forms before getting a mammogram?
  • What are dense breasts? What’s the problem with imaging them?
  • Do digital-mammograms do a better imaging job for dense breasts?
  • What about the dangers of gadoliniumcontrast?
  • Who should get mammograms and how often?
  • How birth control pills are well-recognized “endocrine disruptors” and women should be required to sign informed consent forms before being put on them. Why? Women need to understand their inherent dangers.
  • The critical rhythms of a woman’s body that keep her health and how synthetic hormones disrupt these making women more vulnerable to diverse diseases.
  • How the practice of birth control synthetic hormones borders on malpractice.
  • And more.

You’ll also hear a mention about Sonocine, a new type of video ultra-sound coming down the pike, picking up tumors supposedly before 10 years before mammograms, without ionizing radiation. But we need more studies.

Soon the inventor and radiologist, Ken Kelley MD will be on this show. Stay tuned.

Birth control pills are used by approximately 100 million women world wide, yet few doctors and women understand the many potential dangerous side effects and complications well described many times over the scientific literature.

In this show you learn that birth control pills (BPCs):

  • Rinse multiple numbers of critical nutrients out of the body (and the baby’s body if the baby is conceived only weeks after a woman goes off the pill and hasn’t repleted her own natural stores). You will learn exactly which nutrients, all that should be ingested for protection while on the pill.
  • Can cause an approximate 10% decreased “blunting” of emotions and recognition of facial cues. So much so that scientists suggest that women, when given scripts for the pill, should be warned that use of BCPs might contribute to intimacy/relationship problems.
  • Are linked to a higher incidence of mood disorders like depression and anxiety.
  • Are linked to promoting obesity.
  • Profoundly increase the risk of inflammatory bowel disease and leaky gut in women with genetic predispositions or with other individual vulnerable issues.
  • Can adversely effect thyroid functioning as they rinse out the critical minerals needed to convert “inactive” T4 to “active” T3, which is the main thyroid-signaling molecule. The pill can also increase thyroid binding globulin, which can inactivate thyroid signaling.
  • Can adversely affect adrenal function.
  • Can adversely affect cortisol and anti-inflammatory function.
  • And more!

Synthetic estrogen (ethinyl estradiol) and progesterone (progestins) are hormone-altering-forms of sex steroids. They are not natural. They can have serious consequences in some, not all, well intentioned females.

Birth control pills work by suppressing the natural brain/hormone cross-talk.

Birth control pills are often used to treat perimenopausal symptoms such as hot flashes. This is not a safe idea for several very important reasons, which you will learn why.

People want to be happy. Why? Science is showing that happy people live longer and have better health.  But getting your “happy on” leans on your physical, emotional and cognitive habits.

In this show Dr. Berkson discusses:

  • How to cultivate happy.
  • Why peace is more sustainable and desirable than happy.

Dr. Berkson’s explores the science showing that happiness and optimism effect health issues like breast cancer and high blood pressure.

Did you know there is World Happiness Report 2017, sponsored by the NIH? It names Norway the world’s happiest country while the US is way down the list.

We discuss why.

In this show you’ll learn what do to become more peaceful and congruent inside your body suit.

Positive emotions have such a powerful effect on your cells, there is a branch of psychology now called “Positive Psychology”.

But having bad things happen to good people is part of life.

Dr. Berkson discusses how to avoid the “new age guilt” of “the law of attraction” on rhoids.

We explore the true Vitamin D = discipline.

You’ll learn why getting you “why” on, helps get your vitamin D on.

You’ll learn the effectiveness of Vitamin L = luxury, and getting your “luxury” on.

You’ll meet: “She Who Swims With The Fireman” and the power of compassion on the human spirit.

Dr. Berkson share’s personal 5 steps she’s taking to get her “happy” on this New Year, 2019.

Jan 3, 2019

In the introduction, you will learn one of the new uses for oxytocin as well as a huge meta-analysis review study demonstrating that the most commonly used drugs for Alzheimer’s disease not only don’t work, but make dementia worse.

The major part of this show discusses the science on how “maleness” protects “femaleness” — how Mother Nature designed breasts to be protected by male sex steroid hormone signals.

Dr. Berkson dives into the peer review literature from 2010 to the present. We explore the use of testosterone therapy immediately “after” breast cancer treatment has ended, and one case study in which testosterone and aromatase inhibitor pellets were placed next to the tumor during chemo.

Much of this research comes from prestigious multi-centers across the globe from Greece to the NIH.

The science is suggesting that breast cancer patients on aromatase inhibitors and testosterone, have less recurrence of cancer. And the aromatase therapy works better in tandem than by itself. This means testosterone helps control growth in the breast (the hallmark of cancer is growth out of control). Testosterone along with aromatase inhibitors also appears to make breast cancer cells “die” more effectively (apoptosis).

Hormones signal receptors. The human breast has many testosterone “receptors” to receive testosterone signals. Testosterone delivers “anti-cancer” protective signals to the breast.

When testosterone sex steroid signals are delivered into a receptor, when the signals get deep into the genes of these receptors, breast cells are informed to “stop growing out of control”. Breast cancer cells are encouraged to “die” especially when the patient is also on an aromatase inhibitor (a drug blocking testosterone’s transformation into estrogen).

The ratio of “free” estrogens to “free” testosterone has much to do with breast safety.

Stay tuned for the next show on the underlying mechanisms describing exactly how testosterone acts as an anti-cancer hormone at the breast. You will also learn that testosterone protects against prostate cancer too, not just breast cancer. You will learn more of how to test your estrogen to testosterone ratios, and even learn about foods, nutrients and lifestyle habits that help maintain healthy T to E ratios (testosterone to estrogen).

Why do we get ill? What molecules lurk beneath the surface that act as the “molecules of mass destruction" that put your tissues at risk? If we could identify these molecules, and, if elevated, bring them down to optimal levels, would we reverse disease, pain and even resistant obesity?

This show takes an in-depth look at two main molecules that help initiate and propel diseases such as heart, kidney, diabetes, obesity and even cognitive decline. Research on these molecules comes from respected academic institutions and has been replicated and published in peer review literature.

These molecules are the new terrain of “root cause” medicine, whereby we understand why you are getting ill and how to stop it.

You will learn all about galectin-3. This is a super sticky lectin, like gluten on rhoids. You will also learn about TMAO. This molecule even helps you decide whether a Ketogenic diet is healthy for your body, or not.

If these molecules are elevated, even if your yearly blood work looks normal, you feel tired, wake up with less hope, and your most disciplined dieting efforts don’t work. Learn the new tools of becoming the best version of YOU.

There is a documented epidemic of low testosterone (T) in males, even young males. Insufficient T is not only linked to erectile dysfunction, it is being reproducibly linked to dying prematurely (losing a few years off your life) from diverse causes, referred to as all-cause mortality. Sufficient levels of T, often higher than the lower end of most lab reference ranges, prevents a long list of serious illnesses such as cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, and Type-2 Diabetes.

One of the first symptoms of insufficient T is low energy. This is because testosterone protects mitochondria, the energy production factory in most cells.

Insufficient or low T causes mitochondria to become dysfunctional and you to become fatigued, and not the spry confident guy you used to be.

Often, as males’ age, they may become grumpy, loose their zest for life, and be more prone to prostate cancer. Much of this is reversible or preventable by proper testing and treatment with bioidentical hormones.

But hormones do not exist in a vacuum. A well-rounded hormone doctor will test three kinds of T, at least two kinds of estrogen, adrenal and thyroid hormone health, sometimes other hormones like growth hormone and oxytocin, and sometimes other blood factors, like sex hormone binding globulin. To have proper medical evaluation of your T, the smart doc, to get the best results for you, needs the bigger picture of everything related to your testosterone.

Why is there such an epidemic of low T? Listen to this show and learn. And discover exact steps you can take to protect the males you love.

You can read more about the facts and controversies of T, answered in an easy read in SEXY BRAIN, Dr. Berkson’s latest book.

Today’s show explores your microbiomes, the different biomes between breast cancer and healthy breasts, and even how pollution can attack these microbes.

You’ll also learn how Pollution Attacks Your Biomes and what you can do about it.

Inside the human body are nooks and crannies, called biomes, teeming with microbial life that includes viruses, bacteria and fungi.  We have “biomes” throughout our entire body.

We have biomes in our eyes (the ocular biome), mouth (oral biome), in our esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon (most commonly thought of as our microbiome), in our tonsils, vagina, respiratory tract and lungs, in the uterus, urethra, prostate, skin, and even inside our brain. There are biomes deep inside the chambers of your heart.

Your colon is your most biome dense organ. It’s the most studied so far. But in today’s radio show you learn about your many biomes, especially inside the breast!

Biomes give off peptide signaling molecules that allow biomes to cross-talk with each other and also with distant tissues like your brain. Biome signals and cross-talks are how biomes enormously influence our state of wellness or illness.

Biomes are so powerful they are now being referred to as our “third brain.”

  1. First brain—in your head
  2. Second brain—enteric nervous system inside your gut
  3. Third brain—sum total of microbial life inside all your biomes

We inherited healthy ancestral microbiomesfrom long ago. But with today’s lifestyle, including the Standard American Diet (SAD) and toxic exposures from the environment, these healthy protective microbes are getting “ill” and making us ill.

There are “disease signature dysbiotic” conditions. This means there are distinctive microbial fingerprints for various diseases. For example, patients with multiple sclerosis will have common dysbiotic microbial patterns. So will bulimic patients. So will breast cancer patients, inside their breast tissue! So do Crohn’s inflammatory bowel disease patients. So do post-bariatric surgery patients. And kidney stone formers. And even for Alzheimer, Parkinson, diabetes, and heart disease sufferers. The list goes on and continues to grow.

Diet is the most powerful driving force for the health of these biomes.

Hormone-altering chemicals from your personal care products, or from plastic containers you wash in the dishwasher and use for food, or from sitting in polluted traffic, can all adversely affect your precious biomes.

Cleveland Clinic researchers discovered that breast cancer patients have different breast biomes than breast tissue without disease. “Healthy” breast tissue, from women who didn’t have breast cancer, contains more of a healthy bacterial species called Methylobacterium. Women with breast cancer had much less, if any, Methylobacterium.

Different types of breast cancer have different symbiotic signatures. ER positive and Her2 positive shared a microbiotic signature, while triple negative and triple positive shared a similar microbial pattern.

A lactating breast has a microbiota based on what the mother eats, the bugs on her skin and her gut, and the pollutants she’s been exposed to throughout her life. In contrast to vaginally delivered infants, the gut microbiotaof infants delivered by C-section are significantly less similar to their mothers. Cessation of breast-feeding, rather than introduction of solid food, is what turns a baby’s microbiome into an adult-like microbiota. At three years old, a child’s microbiome starts to look like an adult.

How a baby is delivered initiates the health of their microbiota (the sum of all their biomes). A new born moving through a healthy vaginal biome gets a healthy start. Obese junk-food eating moms will have less healthy vaginal biomes and babies will get a less healthy start. Breastmilk’s microbiota takes it from there, and continues to influence the health of the newborn’s microbiota.

Breast milk stimulates healthy organisms in the infant’s gut like Bifidobacteria, Lactobacillus, and Bacteroides. Short-chain fatty acids in breastmilk activate receptors on T-reg cells and specific genes, so the baby won’t have leaky gut or gut inflammation. Other components of breastmilk (defensins, lactoferrin, etc.) inhibit pathogens and further contribute to microbiota composition. Healthy breastmilk and the vaginal microbiome stimulate baby’s intestinal microbiota to prevent asthma, inflammatory bowel disease, type 1 diabetes and even illnesses when the baby grows up.

The World Health Organization published that polluted air, with excess particulate toxins, is a major contributor to diverse diseases from diabetes to cancer to dementia. Hold on to your hats, air pollution is also being linked to “biome damage.” You’ll hear more about all this on today’s power packed show.

Grammy winning musician, activist and author Judy Collins shares how she conquered her “food addiction” and maintains a stellar figure and career at age 79!

Judy Collins has influenced the world through her music.  If you’re a boomer you might remember Judy’s rendition of  “Both Sides Now” from her album, Wildflowers. That recording resides in the Grammy Hall of Fame. Her version of “Send in the Clowns” also won "Song of the Year” at the Grammies.

That was 1975.  Judy is still going strong. She’s almost 80—but move over Jane Fonda—her career is more than robust and totally envious. She travels worldwide singing her heart out at 150 performances a year. She’s still being nominated for major awards. She has a figure that Barbie would envy. She’s a Renaissance woman who’s also a painter, filmmaker, record label head, musical mentor, activist and in-demand keynote speaker for mental health and suicide prevention.

Why is Judy on this health show today?

Judy Collins is also an author. Today Judy shares her third book, Cravings: how I conquered food. Dame Collins tells us exactly what she eats, how much she eats, and how she works out on the road, to maintain her energy, vitality, and amazing looks. She explains exactly how in the heck she can keep going on strong like this!

PS: Ms. Collins also discusses the “power of womanhood” as it has been evolving over the years, especially relevant with the Me Too Movementof 2018.

Cravings is a no-holds-barred account of Ms. Collin’s struggle with compulsive overeating and her journey that led to effective answers. Since childhood Judy had a tumultuous relationship with food. When she quit smoking, she developed bulimia.  She had already overcome an addiction to alcohol earlier in her life. These issues with addiction and impulsive eating nearly claimed her career and relationships.

For decades Judy thought she simply lacked self-discipline.

In this show, you’ll hear Judy explain that’s she’s learned, beyond a doubt, that her addiction to processed foods caused and maintained her cycle of her addictive cravings and behaviors.

Judy’s “Kryptonite foods” are sugar and grains, flour and wheat.

By avoiding those as well as all unprocessed foods in eating in carefully measured portions, Judy has “easily” maintained a healthy weight and sobriety for years. She also enjoys a sense of mastery over her body and life, which leads to the highest goal: inner peace.

Check out Judy's book, Cravings, on Amazon.

This week we heard about two shocking celebrity suicides from people the public dearly loves and who are considered epitomes of American success stories. Add to these the 123 suicides that stunningly occur every day within the United States, and we have to know that something is very wrong with our culture.

We prioritize success. Over peace. And tools for peace. Instead, we customize ourselves and our children to reflex to  anger, pain, judgment, medications and law suits.  We do not teach in our schools or within our homes what it means to develop tools to be able to be present within ourselves, and to manage ourselves emotionally when suffering slams against our door.

We pathologize life and tell people who are depressed that they need therapy. When we have to take a look at how we live. The beat of our culture is producing a suicidal rhythm. We are prioritizing things that don’t ensure peace and ignore tools that anchor the soul.

Our lives can change so quickly. For good or for bad. We leave our own marks, here and there, on life. In return, life leaves marks, here and there, on us. Some are beautiful. Some hurt like hell.

But learning what runs us, that which we don’t know runs us, is the wise portal to making suffering a smaller font size.

Some hurts get velcroed. They make up our pain body. Dr. Berkson discusses her own bout lately with her own pain body. And shares the lessons.

The more we know what is going on, within us, the less these run us and the more we can manage our emotions.

Why do we prioritize math over tools for the quiet mind?

Talking, not texting, out loud, asking questions, dealing with suffering, all work to help each other feel better inside ourselves. Silence doesn’t.

Need a suicide number? Call 800 273 8255

And did you know, there are meds today that can decrease suicidal thoughts within 30 minutes, like nasal spray ketamine.

There is much that can be done in both the short and long term within our soul’s crevices. When bleeding, you go to the ER. And mental suffering is the chest pain of the mind. It demands attention. But lives focused on productivity and success don’t have time for that attention.

The earlier we encourage our children to develop tools to know themselves and want to authentically know others, and mirror this to them, the better for all of us.

When do we encourage children to know how to have a quiet and powerful relationship with themselves? Not just great grades. And speak about emotional management. And discussing what lies deep within that’s got us that we don’t know has got us?

In today’s society we give feelings such power. But they are only feelings. They come and go. If we learn to surf them for what they are, we are less their victims.

We all have within us the will to live and the will to die.

We have more will to live when we are less “identified” with our feelings.

And more with a sense of deep personal congruency.

That does not come from things.

Loneliness is bad for the spirit and our culture and our planet.

It has nothing to do with mailing list in your business account.

It has everything to do with your personal relationship with yourself.

And reaching out in a most real and human way.

Dr. Berkson shares examples of cases in which patients lives were improved and changed by looking at their condition with a new set of functional medicine eyes.

You will learn about a rare cause of insomnia, called “nocturnal hypertension.”

You will be amazed that one cause of idiopathic infertility may be subclinical hypothyroidism, even if your TSH thyroid blood test is still within normal range.

Did you know that sperm count and shape can “say” a lot about a man’s heath, even his risk for metabolic disease?

You will learn about the concept of “hormonal hyper-excreters” and how it can make some folks seem to fail with hormone replacement, when it is not the hormonal therapy that’s the issue.

You may want to get Dr. Berkson’s Safe Hormones, Smart Women, in book or audio form, to learn more.

How many of us really know ourselves? What runs us that we don’t realize runs us? Have we worked out our demons and learned not to abandon ourselves? Is our inner gut calm or in a state of secret chronic terror? This interview is a delicious and incredibly “calming conversation” about the mysteries of finding livable peace in today’s crazy, cacophonous world.

Want to feel calm. Want an antidote to stress? This interview between Dr. Berkson and Dr. Javed, is YOUR answer.

Dr. Qazi Javed is a double board certified integrative medical physician who got out of school and in his first job saw 30 patients a day, soon realizing this wasn’t fair to either his patients or himself. There had to be another effective way to help others manage their emotions and lives. And to do so without traumatizing each other trying to accomplish healing in 15-minute increments.

Today, Dr. Javed combines orthodox psychiatry with psychotherapy, orthomolecular medicine, nutrition, herbalism, and mind-body approaches.

  • The emphasis is on authenticity.
  • And calm.
  • The focus is “realness” between his patient and himself.
  • Then helping the patient gain this within their own lives.
  • This takes time, commitment, and a doctor that has your priority as his priority. How refreshing. Pretty rare in today’s speedy money and externally oriented culture.

Dr. Javed believes in the value of “connections” in creating and enhancing overall well-being. As humans we have connections both with ourselves and with the world outside ourselves. “Disharmony” in any of these connections causes suffering. “Harmony” between these connections, opens the possibilities for life without pain. A life with room for calm.

Experiencing these concepts unfold in our own mind, actions and relationships, opens portals for healing. And lays the groundwork for sustainable peace.

This is a perfect Mother’s Day podcast. This show is about a “never-giving-up mom on rhoids”—JJ Virgin.

JJ Virgin’s son was in a serious accident and endured an extremely severe head trauma. Her son Grant was literally fighting for his life. The doctors declared there was hardly any chance of surviving let alone his ever being “normal” again.

JJ does not give-up. She dug deep and in this riveting interview you hear how she did that. JJ describes how she creates hope inside herself, when there doesn’t seem to be any. You will hear the exact nutraceuticals and natural protocols she and her finally willing doctor used to heal this un-healable brain catastrophe.

Taking her son from the brink of death with high dose fish oil, hormones, and energy modalities, inspired a new movement toward identifying and resolving brain injuries. Especially in children and teens.

JJ is not new to having courage or stunning success. She is a celebrity nutritionist, fitness adviser, public speaker, and media personality. She’s been a regular on high-profile shows like Dr. Oz, Dr. Phil, the TODAY show, Access Hollywood and more.

. JJ has an amazing talent for “inspiring mindsets that birth miracles”  and then providing tools that then nudge these miracles to multiply.

JJ is known for her amazing buffed bare arms  and for decades she has taught clients how to lose weight and master their mindset to help them maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Currently JJ’s brain child—Mind Share, which is where I met JJ for the first time—focuses on the functional medicine community online. This is an exciting networking group of diverse health professionals from MDs to health coaches, that help each other get their word and products out into the world.

I know you will be inspired and moved hearing JJ’s story of determination, resilience and mama warrior courage.
