Funky Food; fermented & predigested options with healthy food strategies with Sarica Cernohous. She is a Traditional Chinese Medical Doctor, Wellness Strategist and best selling author of The Funky Kitchen, and its accompanying online course, “Fresh, Fun and Flavorful in The Funky Kitchen.”

Sarica guides people toward developing an enhanced and individualized understanding of how to eat in harmony with their constitution (body/mind/spiritual makeup) and to stay well or get well from disease and stress.

Sarica and Dr. Berkson engage in a lively discussion on what is fermented food, what is “authentic” or “fake” fermented food. How today’s wine and beer are different than hundreds of years ago. What fermentation does to proteins, carbs and food structure and why this makes a huge difference in health and allergenic load.

They discuss how not eating in-between meals is a huge healing habit, yet most Americans “nosh” themselves into excess calories, obesity, disease and dementia.

Sarica and Dr. B go into depth about candida organisms. We discuss the different states when candida is in harmony with us versus at war with us. We discuss eating to “humanize” ourselves, rather than promote dehumanizing ourselves.

The American cultural is addicted to excess. If a little is good, then more is better. This addiction to excess even applies to smoothies. We discuss why more food simplicity is critical for us all, adults and young kids alike.

Turns out that eating food is part of good food hygiene. Not eating food for long enough is also part of it. We usually don’t look at food from this critical perspective.

S and Dr. B debate bone broth, which growing in use so much, it is getting neck-and-neck with coffee as an American beverage. Yet, bone broth has both light and shadow sides. You’ll learn about these.

Berkson shares her in-depth Kimchi whore house experience, and if you don’t laugh till your cry, you must already be on to your next incarnation.  If you write Berkson, you can get this famous, healthy and tasty recipe (info@drlindseyberkson.com).

You’ll also learn: How to use a Snapple bottle top to help promote healthier circulation and promote body/mind integration, through upping “Gua sha” — and why should you care, what is “predigestion” and how do traditional fermented foods play a role in chronic disease, how much fermented food is healthy to eat, how to take baby steps if you are just beginning to clean up your diet and consume fermented foods, what are the “real” and “non-real” sour dough’s, what should labels say to tell you what’s good for your gut or if the food is truly fermented, which fermented foods—like sauerkraut—should you never eat and where do they “live” in grocery stores, and why isn’t this information widely discussed if it’s so important?

You will be pretty stunned to learn that almost everybody has some degree of “leaky gut” after most meals, but the issue is the degree. This natural phenomena, that drives nourishment into our blood stream so the gut wall has to open up to a certain degree, is scientifically called “post-prandial bacterial translocation” and sometimes it’s good and sometimes it’s bad.  Fermented foods can reduce the “bad” version.

PS: Gua Sha means "scraping till you create bruising" and is a traditional Chinese medical treatment in which the skin is scraped to create light bruising which stimulates blood flow and healing. Best news, you can do this on yourself or your loved ones. The benefits, according to Sarica, are pretty instantaneous.

Sarica Cernohous shares recipes and health articles on her website, NaturallyLivingToday.com.

Dush Ramachandran is a business transformation coach who grows companies from $50 to $350 million for everyday folks to have supreme business health and make their dreams come true.

Dush’s podcast the “Entrepreneur Effect” is one of the most watched and respected shows on line. It guides solo businesses to know how to succeed. This show has 400,000 listeners every single month!

Dush is President & CEO of a business, The Net Momentum Corp that helps people launch their products and companies.

In this show, Dush discusses how he helps businesses, books and online courses soar. Everything is moving to the web, okay, maybe not surgery. But a lot.

But this ability for the net to help us soar is this week under attack.

We have been enjoying the “Democratization of Media.” If you wanted to attain media reach even 15 years ago, you would have had to own a T.V. station, a radio station, a newspaper, or a film production company. Today with YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Word Press, and Pinterest (and some interesting content), you could easily gain worldwide reach with a large number of followers.

These platforms have leveled the playing field for entrepreneurs.

They can now have an online presence similar to that of multi-billion-dollar corporations, with some effort and very little money. Now that’s exciting!

But this week, “Net Neutrality” is being voted on by the FCC to try to give more business speed and oomph to the larger and richer players, like phone and cable companies. And elbow the little business out.

Dush helps us surf whatever the business “is-ness” is, so we can make supreme business health a reality. Learn how Dush, an ex-VP of Business Development at the largest online marketplace of digital products, Click Bank, now helps regular folks become extraordinary.

And Dush has the background and skills to do it. When Dush was with Click Bank, he helped grow the company’s revenues nearly 500% in five years.

Its one thing to have a dream to invent, create, write or have a voice, but it’s another a whole other world letting the world know about it. And get them to buy it.

Dush helps your dreams become win/wins.

With the FCC wanting to change “net neutrality”, this could change your ability to make your dreams come true.  Call your representatives and let them know your concerns. Today!

Dush gives us sound advice.

Every entrepreneur needs a plan.  Always start with a plan, even if it is sketched out on a scrap of paper. Dush remembers sketching the plan for a $200 million deal he did for one of my companies on a beer coaster in a pub in Germany. The terms for the sale of one of his companies was written up on a sheet of lined paper and exchanged with the buyers. Simply writing things down can make a plan so much clearer. I’m always telling my Net Momentum clients to write down their plans, no matter how simple they may appear.

With the Baby Boomer generation growing older, the largest generation ever is now settling down and changing our very concept of aging. This generation has participated in incredible wealth creation. More wealth has been created in the last 60 years than in all of history before that time. Opportunities to serve this demographic are huge.

Any idea that gives Boomers greater convenience and control over their lives will be hugely successful.

Dush’s favorite online tool for you to know about: Google Trends.

Google Trends tells us what people are searching for and where searches for each of these terms originate. You can even compare search volumes for two similar terms (e.g., BMW vs. Mercedes) and the impact of a news item on the search. There is nothing that pinpoints our zeitgeist like this tool.

Three people Dush suggests you should follow on Twitter.

Brendon Burchard, because he is one of the most ethical marketers out there.
Guy Kawasaki for his trenchant views on the venture capital industry.
Will Ferrell because he’s one of the funniest comedians of our generation.

When Dush isn’t helping your business, he’s pushing the limits on a motorcycle in the mountains of Colorado.

Most of us learn math, history and the tools of our trade whatever that may be. But most of us are never taught how to love, to make love stay. We erroneously believe that if we only meet the exactly right person, love with stay. We think that passion is only part of the early part of romance. But passion is a critical part of making marriages happy and enduring, yet we are never taught how to have passion with our mate in a way that accomplishes this.

Like everything else, practice makes perfect and knowledge is power. This show empowers you to have success and longevity in love. And as you will learn, this helps you have a more stable family life and is even health and brain boosting for your kids. “Home Air” is more critical to your health than community air. So, the “bad” news is: your “home” is where your worse air pollution might lurk. But your “good” news is: since it’s your own home (even if it’s an apartment), you can take action to protect yourself and those you love. But you have to know the problem, how to assess it and what to do about it. That is what this show is stunningly about.

Terry Wright, with an environmental science background and in this business for 35 years, discusses how important home air quality is to keep you well or get your well once you are ill. This includes diverse health issues from infertility to cognition and from dermatologic issues to your child’s academic capabilities.

Unhealthy air in your home can get “seeded” from your attic, a moldy basement, or from dampness hidden under a sink. Unhealthy home air has been linked to infertility, ADHD, brain fog, dementia, severe fatigue, lung issues and more.

We think that the small air filters we buy from the grocery store every several months (ha) protects what we inhale 24/7. But that is not necessarily the case. Nor is purchasing new furnaces with UV light purifiers. The facts surrounding home air quality are not known by many, yet are so vastly influential on our health.

Today, many of us are trying to eat better, work out more and perhaps even sit less. But who knew that the air you breathe while you sleep and hang out at home, is vastly critical to well being. You know I also add to the healthy to-do list… hormonal health. This is because hormones dictate our physiologic Internet system. But air is constant. It’s powerful. And home air quality can often go south and contribute amazingly to your un-wellness. And all this can be unfolding without any awareness on your part or even your doctor’ part.

Once you hear this show, you will want to go to www.pureairdoctor.com and sleuth around. If you decide to purchase an air consultation, or any products, when you put in Dr. Berkson’s code, 247, you get a 10% discount, and will not be charged for taxes or shipping.

An amazingly unique and helpful service, is that Mr. Wright will chat for free for 5 to 10 minutes when you first call (Toll Free # 800.234.6399). Then you can choose to set up an in-home consult via Skype.

Mr. Wright will look, via Skype, at your attic, under your sinks, and all through your casa. From his rich expertise of what to do to ensure high quality air free of mold, mycotoxins, heavy metals, and toxic dust and on and on, Mr. Wright will discuss his assessment and your options.

The list of what to do to stay well and get-well keeps enlarging. Now you need to add home air quality at the top of that set of to-do bullets.

Food Mood & Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving statistics:

The very 1st Thanksgiving Day occurred in the year 1621. It was a three-day festival held by pilgrims celebrating their blessings of the harvest. They invited Indians. Indians donated five deer, so venison was on the dinner table menu, and there wasn’t any turkey. There were also no pumpkin pies or potatoes as they hadn’t yet been introduced into the New England landscape. No one planned on this grateful feast creating an annual tradition.

1789. President George Washington announced the first Thanksgiving holiday, but it didn’t yet become an annual holiday until the 19th C. How did that happen? The American poet, Sarah Josepha Buell Hale, who is famous for  writing the nursery rhyme "Mary Had a Little Lamb" is responsible. She had the vision of an annual Thanksgiving American holiday. But to make it so, she campaigned, wrote and cajoled, for 30 years, for the creation of the American holiday known as Thanksgiving to come to be.

Sarah also created the foods we have come to know as part of this holiday, such as roasted turkey and pumpkin pies. She created and published these recipes that are famous for being cooked in Thanksgiving kitchens.

1863. In the midst of the civil war President Lincoln made Thanksgiving an official yearly holiday. He proclaimed it to occur on the last Thursday of each November.

1939. President franklin D. Roosevelt moved Thanksgiving to one week earlier to help small business owners make more money during the challenging Depression times.

1989. President George Bush granted the first official pardon to a turkey sending them to retirement on a farm rather than for dinner on the table. Many presidents continue to pardon turkeys. Did you know that?

Thanksgiving is a national holiday celebrated in Canada, the United States, some of the Caribbean islands, and Liberia but often on different dates than it’s celebrated in the US.

We equate Thanksgiving with food.

Great food.

And a lot of it.

As fate would have it, Thanksgiving this year (2017) overlaps with my dear colleague Kiran Ram’s amazing Food and Mood Project. So I decided to do a show and write a blog on food and mood.

Robert Ritch, MD, FACS Glaucoma pearls from the world’s expert. 10.28.17

It used to be said the one of the biggest fears of many is public speaking. But now as humanity is living longer than ever, the hugest terrors are the fear of going blind.

Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. But it is greatly misunderstood. It is actually a large number of illnesses, some of the of the eye, and some of them systemic.

Dr. Robert Ritch is a leading glaucoma expert. Dr. Ritch has developed many procedures now in place by glaucoma specialists around the world. He has also defined exfoliation syndrome, which he says many eye doctors are not adequately trained to identify.

Dr. Ritch says that any cogent physician, reading and understanding the literature, must embrace nutritional intervention as much as procedures and medications.

There are diverse forms of glaucoma. Some are eye diseases and some are brain diseases. Some affect mostly the eye site, others affect vulnerability to other diseases.

High-pressure glaucoma is an “eye disease” that makes the internal eye pressure of the eye elevate (intraocular pressure) causing optic nerve damage.

Normal or low-pressure glaucoma is more often a “systemic disease”. It occurs more frequently in thinner women with various attributes: astute sense of smell, tendency to low blood pressure, cold extremities, driven personalities, and tendency to various cardiovascular disease issues that do not necessarily shorten their life span.

Exfoliation syndrome is when pigment comes off (exfoliates) from the iris. The iris gives your eye its color. Blue eyes come from an iris with bluish pigment.

Your iris helps control the diameter and size of the pupil and thus the amount of light reaching your retina. When pigment sloughs off from the iris, it can clog the ability of the eye to drain. Fluid builds up. This increases the inner eye pressure and ultimate can start to damage the optic nerve.

The optic nerve is part of the brain. As it damages, you can loose vision. This is called visual field damage.

·      High-pressure glaucoma is an eye disease secondary to elevated eye pressure.

·      Normal or low-pressure glaucoma are diseases of the optic nerve that can’t withstand pressure variations or elevations, and often involve brain and whole body health.

Transforming growth factor beta1 (TGFB1) is a protein, called a cytokine, that when elevated, can promote dangerous inflammatory changes, especially within the eye. There are a large body of peer review published data linking elevated TFGB1 to open angle normal pressure glaucoma.

TGFB1 is elevated in both normal pressure glaucoma and exfoliation syndrome patients. It is not often elevated in high-pressure glaucoma. Specific nutrients and herbs have been shown, in peer review science, to normalize TGFB1 levels. When is eye damage the worse? The worst window for eye damage is potentially during the night. Blood pressure tends to lower slightly in all health people as we sleep. But if blood pressure goes too low, or there is sleep apnea present, the eye pressure moves in the opposite direction and dangerously elevates. If this happens, eye damage can be relentless while you sleep.

If you have normal or low tension glaucoma, to avoid nocturnal eye damage, raising the head of the bed by 20% (you can buy sleeping wedges at Bed Bath & Beyond), salt loading before bed with a glass of tomato juice, improve sleep apnea with machines, all which can reduce eye damage while you sleep.

Nocturnal eye damage can be to the optic nerve or to other structures of the eye. It is not limited to the optic nerve. Not many doctors, even eye or sleep doctors, are aware of the huge link between sleeping and eye health.

Sleeping on one side may enhance optic nerve damage in the eye on that side, in glaucoma patients.  It’s a good idea for glaucoma patients or high risk patients, to train themselves to sleep on their back.

Nutrients are a must. Dr. Ritch recommends many nutrients such as pigments from flowers that help preserve eye structure thickness, Meriva turmeric, Gingko Biloba, specific minerals like zinc and magnesium, citicholine oil (Italian studies on humans with eye drops with this show reversal of visual field damage but only supplements of this are available in the US), fish oils, and much more.

Nutritional shocking back copy. Dr. Ritch explains how nutrition originally got vilified in medicine (Morris Fishbein was head of the AMA and editor of NEJM for years, and based on greed changed the course of medical history) and it’s a fascinating and sad story.

Dr. Berkson wrote this up in depth in her blog on how health care lost its way. Check it out here: https://drlindseyberkson.com/losing-care-healthcare-medicine-lost-way-especially-regarding-natural-answers-diseases/

Micro-stents. When a glaucoma patient gets cataract surgery, the FDA has approved the placement of micro-stents to stabilize the damaging ups and downs of pressure in the eye. This procedure is reimbursable by Medicare. When a stent is placed at the same time as getting a new lens, then you cannot get corrective laser eye procedures.

This show is a rare opportunity to hear about eye health with a focus on glaucoma from a physician that treats kings and presidents all around the world.

Dr. Robert Ritch holds the Shelley and Steven Einhorn Distinguished Chair in Ophthalmology and is Surgeon Director Emeritus and Chief of Glaucoma Services at the New York Eye & Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai, New York City and Professor of Ophthalmology. When still a fellow in 1978, he performed the first laser iridotomy in New York and initiated the first course on laser treatment of glaucoma at the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He is a world leader in exfoliation syndrome, which affects 80 million people, and has started a global consortium to work on preventing, reversing, and even curing this disease.

Dr. Ritch has co-authored or edited nine textbooks and over 1800 medical and scientific papers, book chapters, articles and abstracts. He has presented over 750 lectures worldwide, including 50 named lectures and has received over 60 national and international awards and medals.

In 1985, he founded the Glaucoma Foundation and has served as Secretary, Medical Director, and Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board. In 1994, he initiated the annual Optic Nerve Rescue and Regeneration Think Tank, which has attracted numerous successful researchers from other fields into glaucoma research.

When it’s fat or real estate, it’s all about location, location, location!

Where your fat is located on your body, affects your overall health, your brain structure and function, and even your ability to be mindful… or not.

In this show you learn plenty of facts and fiction about fat cells.

Fat has more functions than we thought.

  • Fat stores excess calories so you can mobilize the fat stores for energy when you need them.
  • Fat releases hormones that control metabolism (metabolism refers to how you burn calories as energy, or store calories as fat).
  • Fat protects organs.
  • Fat acts like Jekyll and Hyde depending on where it lives, what type of fat it is and how many of them are there.
  • Hormone altering chemicals love fat.  Pollutants that mascaraed as hormones, can hide inside fats cells making them act physiologically nasty. Dr. Bruce Blumberg has labeled these endocrine disruptors that especially make for unhealthy fat cells, obesogens.

Fat cares about location.

Not all fat is created equal. Where your fat “lives” modifies it’s function.

  • Visceral fat lives inside your gut surrounding your organs.
  • Subcutaneous fat lies under your skin.

Mounting evidence shows that fat lying deep within the abdomen is more perilous than the fat you can pinch with your fingers on your underarm, inner thigh and even on your belly just under your skin.

Fat that lives right underneath your skin, that feels relatively soft and that you can pinch between your fingers, is called subcutaneous fat.

In a healthy person, you should have a bit of fat under your skin that makes up a bout 90% of your fat stores.

The remaining 10% — called visceral or intra-abdominal fat —lies outside of your easy reach, beneath your firm abdominal wall. This fat fills the spaces surrounding abdominal organs like your liver, intestines, spleen and others. Visceral fact can also be found inside your omentum. This is an apron-like flap of tissue that lies under the belly muscles and blankets the intestines. The omentum gets harder and thicker as it fills with fat.

As women approach middle years, their proportion of fat to body weight increases often more than this happens in males.  Their belly enlarges. Fat storage starts to thicken the torso, fill up under the armpits, and thicken the waist, especially in the back.

Even if you don't actually gain weight, your waistline can grow by inches as visceral fat pushes out against the abdominal wall.

Fat is biologically active. It releases hormones that affect our health.

Subcutaneous fat releases healthy hormones.

  1. Subcutaneous fat releases the hormone leptin. When leptin is released in optimal amounts, it acts on the brain to suppress appetite (to help you not over eat) and even helps burn stored fat throughout the body so you don’t get fat.
  2. Subcutaneous fat also releases adiponectin. Adiponectin protects the body against diabetes and heart disease by regulating how the body processes fats and sugars. Adiponectin also is a powerful anti-inflammatory molecule, especially protecting the linings of blood vessels.
    • Adiponectin is made a bit by visceral fat, too, as long as there isn’t too much of it. But adiponectin production falls severely as visceral fat volume increases.
    • As people become fatter, they make less adiponectin. This increases their risk of diabetes, heart disease, dementia and the list keeps growing.

Visceral fat cells, in comparison, secrete unhealthy molecules and hormones.

  1. Visceral produces proteins called cytokines. These can trigger and maintain low-levels of unhealthy inflammation. Excessive inflammation is an independent risk factor for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, dementias and other serious chronic conditions.
  2. Visceral fat also produces a precursor to angiotensin, a protein that causes blood vessels to constrict, blood pressure to rise, and increases the risk of stroke.
  3. Visceral fat sets the scene for insulin resistance, another risk factor for many diseases as well as symptoms like fatigue, insomnia, out of control hunger and brain fog.

How to tell if you have too much bad visceral fat?

  • If you have a pot belly you most like have excess visceral fat.
  • If you gut protrudes past your breasts.
  • If a woman’s waist is over 35 inches.
  • If a man’s waist is over 40 inches.

Your belly/your brain.

One study followed 6,500 members of Kaiser Permanente of Northern California, a large HMO (health maintenance organization), for an average of 36 years, from the time they were in their 40s until they were in their 70s. They tracked who got dementia, and compared this to their belly fat.

Those with the biggest bellies had the higher risk of dementia compared to people with smaller bellies. The link was true even for people with excess belly fat but overall of normal weight.

How does belly fat cause brain damage?

  1. Leptin: Excess belly fat can cause leptin malfunction. This can cause issues with cognition, memory and hunger control.
  2. RBP4: Researchers at Harvard have discovered that, compared with subcutaneous fat, visceral fat secretes larger amounts of retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4). Excesses of this molecule increase insulin resistance. As the volume of visceral fat increases, so do levels of RBP4.
  • This connection is so predictable, researchers are developing a blood test for RBP4 as a way for physicians to accurately measure an individual's amount of visceral fat.

Belly fat can be confusing. It can be both visceral and subcutaneous. It’s not easy to know exactly how much of your gut fat is killing your brain and your future. At the moment, the only way to determine which of your belly fat is subcutaneous or visceral, is by CT scan. This is expensive. And creates huge radiation exposure .So the test of RBP4  mentioned above, is promising, but not yet available

Did you know there are 3 types of fat cells: white, brown and brite (beige).

  1. White fat. This is stored energy. When you cut calories, you tend to loose white fat cells. When you add more exercise expenditure to smaller portions, you tend to loose more white fat cells. Most of visceral fat is white fat cells.
  2. Brown fat. Brown fat is now thought to be more like muscle than like white fat. When activated, brown fat burns white fat. Brown adipose tissue contributes to your body’s core temperature maintenance through a process called non-shivering thermogenesis. Lean people have more brown fat and more non-shivering thermogenesis. Children have more brown fat than adults and it helps keep them warm. Cold weather promotes brown fat synthesis. Studies show that in Boston in the wintertime, brown fat is more active, and this stimulates metabolism and burning of calories.
  3. Brite (beige fat) is brow fat marbled within white fat. Brite fat regulates energy expenditure and fights against obesity.

Interchangeable:

White fat can turn beige. Beige fat can revert back to white fat. Conversion factors depend upon how you eat, move and the balance of all your hormone family members. For example, underactive thyroid or testosterone can be tamping down your metabolism and play a role into your types of fat cells.

  • Obesity = occurs when you have more white fat than the other types of fat, from consuming more energy than you use, or having unhealthy hormones and nutrient status (hormone depend on nutrients to keep you health).
  • You can fight obesity = by eating less, moving more, and eating more fishmeals or taking essential fatty acid fish supplements.
  • Why? Fish oil helps you make more brown and brite fat, which ups your ability to burn calories.

The “Browning of White Fat” (white fat turning beige).

Exercise promotes the release of an exercise hormone called Irisin. In 2012, Bruce Spiegelman, PhD, a cell biologist at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, dubbed this exercise hormone as "Irisin," after Iris, the Greek messenger goddess. Spiegelman said that exercise “signals” your body to maintain healthier weight.

You make the choice to exercise. As you exercise, your activated muscles produce and release irisin. Irisin promotes brown fat cell production within white fat cells. This is browning of white fat, by exercise through the middleman of irisin.

More browned white fat means your metabolism increase. You burn more calories. It’s less difficult to maintain a healthier weight.

Irisin has multiple benefits.

  • Promotes white fat browning.
  • Triggers neurogenesis (the growth of new neurons), especially within your brain.
  • Increases the expression of BDNF(brain-derived neurotrophic factor).
  • Activates genes involved in learning and memory.
  • Lengthens telomeres (tips of DNA). The longer your telomeres, the more you fight off disease, aging and premature death.

Society is ever changing and so is pediatric medicine. The kids of today are different kids than from several decades ago. They are more ill. There is more childhood obesity, depression, autism and diseases that used to occur mainly in seniors.  For example, both types of diabetes, both 1 and 2, are steadily increasing in kids as well as mood disorders.

Pediatrics is the branch of medicine that involves the medical care of infants, children, and adolescents. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends patients under pediatric care are infants through age of 21 years.

A medical doctor who specializes in this area is known as a pediatrician. The word pediatrics means the “healer of children”.

Dr. Kilbane is just that, a caring healer of kids. One of Dr. Kilbane’s patients wrote me that I should have her on the show because she had so much smart plus heart. This show reveals both sides, in spades!

Dr. Kilbane says that today’s kids are “over fed and under exercised” along with way too much sitting. Still, with a very ill child, these improvements are enough. Healing the child, means healing the entire family.

If mom and dad are stressed, in conflict, eating poorly, or ill themselves, the child—who is wide open and mirrors everything—takes much of this on. Especially in the gut and nervous system. Which sets the scene for un-wellness throughout many tissues in the young child or teen’s body. Today, so many children are so ill,  healing them is often not easy, especially with quick fixes like antibiotics and other pills.

Dr. Kilbane originally practiced orthodox pediatrics. She soon realized that she wasn’t achieving cures. The same ill kids kept coming back in with similar or migrating symptoms. Her tool bag of meds felt small, ineffectual and inadequate. So Dr. K went back to school. She got board certified in integrative medicine. This changed her life and the lives of those lucky to find her.

Now Dr. Kilbane signs families up for a shared journey. She strives to get the whole family involved.  She has designed an online course for the whole family that has been very successful. You can take it without even being a patient and there is a link below.

The focus needs to be on improving the diet. This means eating whole and unprocessed foods. Food is the most powerful driver of a healthier microbiome and healthier gut. You don’t have to give up meat, but you have to eat a lot more veggies. And fresh foods, not processed foods. And avoid foods shrunk wrapped in plastic.

It’s critical that the whole family makes the changes you are asking your child to make. It is not fair to take bread and candy out of a child’s life, while these same foods are still in the fridge and in the cupboards,  still being eaten and enjoyed by others. The whole family has to get on board.

Mattresses make a difference. We sleep on them for 8 to 10 hours. So healthy beds make healthier kids. Link below!

What diseases are on the rise in kids? Allergies, ADHD, autism, childhood Pott’s disease, sleep apnea, obesity, and emotional/social disorders like anger management and anxiety, autoimmune diseases, adolescent fatigue (mitochondrial dysfunction), and more.

Factors are being identified that occur in youth, which are the origins of heart disease in later life. These include pregnancy habits, genetics, dietary and physical activity habits, second-hand, and third-hand smoking, as well as environmental factors including air pollution and global climate changes. For example, being within half a mile of a busy highway increases your child’s risk of asthma, respiratory illnesses and even behavioral changes.

  • Our children are our future. Our future is threatened.
  • Passionate physicians like Dr. Sheila Kilbane are needed to secure the future of our children, our families and our planet.

This is an inspirational, inspiring and informative show with exact steps to help your help your children be healthier.

Kid Alert! Does Your Child Need An Entitlement Intervention? Especially before the holidays! Dr. Michael Wetter is a nationally recognized behavioral health expert who has written the new book that gives you all the answers about how you can raise kids that aren’t entitled and self-centered.

Remember the song lyrics in the musical Bye Bye Birdie – “Kids, I don’t know what’s wrong with these kids today!” That’s seem true forever. Most generations bemoan these sentiments. But today, we really have a generation of parents intimidated by their children. And we have a generation of kids that want more and more while not seeming to ever get enough.

Kids are our future. If our kids are entitled and narcissistic this does not bode well for our culture and planet, let alone a harmonious family life.

This show is a fascinating narrative about how to address specific situations to be able to raise your child to appreciate your efforts and be a humble human being, rather than becoming a black hole of consumerism, wanting more and more and always more.

How to know if you kid needs an entitlement intervention?

  • If your daughter’s 10th birthday party cost more than your wedding!
  • If your 4-year-old son starts shrieking if you don’t get him that toy car at the check-out!
  • If your 16-year-old expects a new car for their birthday !
  • If when talking with adults, your kid comes up to you both, and you ignore the adult and address all your focus on your kid!
  • If you put your spouse beneath your kid!
  • If your kids keep wanting more and more yet they are becoming more anxious, depressed and unhappy, even when they get all they want.

With the holidays on the horizon, most parents worry about how many gifts are enough to give their children.

How do we say NO to all their requests - often demands - for presents?

Many of us can’t stop ourselves from ordering that one extra thing from the catalog.  BUT HE WANTED THAT!  SHE WAS COUNTING ON IT!

You will learn about in these contentious political times, to teach your kids agreeable ways to disagree?

You’ll hear how to guide your kids to isn’t performing well in school how can I talk to him/her without being angry or showing disappointment?

You’ll learn specific steps to get your kids to take better care of their things – toys, iPhones, and clothes.

You‘ll hear exact steps for your children to not take everything you provide for them for granted.

You will learn how to instill gratitude.

How to deal with constant interruptions.

Why your kid expects you to drop everything when they need you and what to do about it.

When your kids has trouble with a task, they walk away from it and sulk, you’ll learn to-dos.

And you will appreciate that, “Teaching your kids to succeed means first teaching them how to fail!”

Michael G. Wetter also the author of What Went Right: Reframe Your Thinking for a Happier Now. A nationally recognized behavioral health expert, Wetter is a diplomat and fellow of the American Psychotherapy Association and has served on the California State Licensing Board of Psychology.  In addition to his private practice, Dr. Wetter is on the clinical staff of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he has served as the Associate Director of Psychology at the Center for Weight Loss, as well as manager for General surgery, Plastic/Reconstructive surgery, and Bariatric surgery. He is a Clinical Instructor of Surgery at Cedars-Sinai, one of the only psychologists to receive such distinction.

Dr. Sam Rahbar heads the Los Angeles Gastroenterology and Nutrition Center. Dr. Sam is one of the few gut docs that incorporates anti-aging & functional medicine together with an integrative holistic approach focused on digestive care. His practice embraces mind & body, lifestyle & nutrition, identifying and treating inflammation, infections, immune system issues, toxic burdens, allergies, hormone balancing, and most importantly, optimizing gut integrity.

There are not a lot of gut doctor’s like Rahbar. In this 1.5 hour in-depth show Dr. Sam shares a number of his rare clinical pearls.

Dr. Rahbar specializes in sleuthing out “stealth infections” that distract or occupy your immune system away from doing its main job, which is protecting your health, and especially your gut. Dr. Rahbar explains why he invented his new Pacific SIBO Breath testing to have more quality control (which many breath tests don’t have).

Dr. Rahbar won both the Patient’s Choice Award and the Vitals Compassionate Doctor Award. Less than 3% to 5% of the nation’s physicians are given these honors, which are based on patient satisfaction, bedside manner, follow-up attention and effectiveness.

Berkson and Rahbar met when they lectured together at the A4M’s gut module training, part of the 2 year certification program for MDs to get board certified in functional natural medicine. Berkson and Rahbar share heart plus smart conversations to help you help your gut.

Within your own life, are you committed, without being held hostage in an insane asylum? Are you homogenate through and through? What you see is what you get? Or are you one way at home and another way in public because you have hidden agendas. Agendas that secretly focus on “What’s in it for YOU” though you’d never in a million years admit this to ANYBODY.

Dr. Berkson deeply felt a huge need to do a show on authenticity.

What is it? What does it really look like? Why does it seem that today’s world has so little of it. Or maybe this has always been the condition of life on earth.  Perhaps due to social media, forced media and legal transparency, we are now realizing it?

It’s hard to know whom to trust.

What’s fake or real news? Who are the fake or real people? Angst fills the air of many communities. Around the world.

Americans are feeling the heat of multiple disasters on diverse fronts: hurricanes, fires, mass killings, polarized politics, possible invasion of democracy from outside forces, and possible unauthentic beats go on.

We see some amazing humanity. There were and continue to be hero’s in Houston, Las Vegas and Puerto Rico.

But there’s so much confusion as to what veracity roams our airways.

Life’s so confusing right now; it’s hard to not be confused inside ourselves.

Many of us, caught up in 24/7 speed, stress and pursuit, are cut off from our neck down. We overeat. Seek distractions. Sit more than move. Down pills to sleep and seek fast fixes for complex illnesses.

It’s not an easy path to know how to be ‘present’ within. To find our own authentic selves.

But to heal a serious illness, we are called upon to dig deep and get congruent with of all ourselves—body, mind and spirit. Or else we will be velcroed to a conveyor belt of meds, procedures and learned helplessness.

How do you show up in your life? Worrying how you are going to make more money, be safer, get all your ducks in a row? But this doesn’t include being mindful of your body, food, exercise, or avoiding the ever growing burden of toxins in today’s most polluted environments, which happens to be your very own homes and bathrooms and fridge.

What runs run big pharma, big medicine, and big politics, seems to always comes down to following the money.

Not authenticity.

But money is not what heals you. Knowledge in action does.

Finding your own sacred space and sacred self-love discipline, these are a must.

Allowing a renewed self love and commitment to flourish, is a must.

Not selfishness, but self love, is what it takes to get off the drug and disease merry-go-rounds.

Aren’t you tired of hypocrisy?

Berkson invited Dr. Jill Carnahan on the show to discuss authenticity. In medicine. In life. With her patients and herself.

A true hero’s example of authenticity is Dr. Jill’s inspiring story of healing herself from severe aggressive breast cancer and inflammatory bowel disease. It’s a story of self-honesty, discipline and motivation. From this deep well of experience Dr. Jill passes these passions foreword.

Drs. Berkson and Carnahan met at a gut module for A4M, a relicensing seminar for medical doctors. This weekend is part of an in-depth 2-year certification program in functional medicine for physicians. Berkson and Carnahan were both professors for the 100 docs in the audience.

Dr. Jill struck the audience with her authenticity and brilliance. In this show, you get to hear an in-depth inspiring dialogue about being real. And getting well no matter what disease you have.

Dr. Jill was diagnosed with severely aggressive breast cancer in her third year of medical school. The multiple chemotherapeutics caused gut damage. She developed Crohn’s disease. She was told that this was an incurable, life long situation. She should expect to ultimately lose part of her colon and perhaps even get cancer again, but this time in her colon.

15 years later Dr. Jill is cancer and Crohn’s free. She’s put about 100 Crohn’s patients into remission. As well as breast cancer patients.

This show gets down and real about the body’s ability to heal. What it takes. How to live like this. And why.

We discuss what’s at the core of today’s lack of authenticity.

You’ll learn about the role of the microbiota in health and disease. You’ll hear about “biomes” cross-talk. And how the Cleveland Clinic’s new research discovered the breast biome. And more.

Dr. Liz Lipski’s entire career has been focused on food. Dr. Lipski is a Professor and the Director of the Academic Development graduate nutrition programs at Maryland University’s Integrative Health. She holds a PhD in Clinical Nutrition with a specialization in Integrative Medicine. She teaches for the prestigious Institute for Functional Medicine, the Metabolic Medicine Institute fellowship program and for medical physician certification programs for A4M. Liz also sits on the boards for Certified International Health Coaches. So Liz trains all kinds of professionals on the ins and outs of what is healthy eating and everything surrounding nourishment.

On this very dynamic and informative show, Dr. Liz explains why so many diets clash. She explains the base 80% similar core between all healthy diets. You’ll learn dietary basics so you can finally get unconfused about all things related to food.

You will hear about the exact diet that a famous medical doctor used to actually get rid of her severe multiple sclerosis diagnosis, once and for all. The power of food!

Berkson and Lipski discuss the differences between regular medicine and functional medicine. The example is migraine. Regular medicine treats all migraines the same, and offers similar meds. In contrast, functional nutritional experts start from the premise that there are diverse causes of migraines. So each patient needs to be explored for his or her individual root cause of his or her suffering. But the starting point is food.

You will learn exactly what are GMO foods, the varietals of GMOS, and why (and how) you want to avoid them. The conversation also explores Roundup, cottonseed oil versus other oils, glyphosate, eating out at restaurants, and the “is-ness” of today’s toxic world.

You will learn what is the ideal intake of daily veggies and fruits. And you will learn how Berkson and Lipski make this do-able in their daily menus, and how you can, too.

Berkson and Lipski have been colleagues for over 30 years. Their conversation is illuminating, relaxed and inspiring.

Dr. Lipski is published in peer reviewed journals including Nutrition in Clinical Practice and Integrative Medicine: A Clinician’s Journal, and is the author of several books: Digestive WellnessThe Digestion ConnectionDigestive Wellness for Children, and Leaky Gut Syndrome. She is a contributing author for Integrative Gastroenterology.

Dr. Lipski has a mentoring program called Innovative Healing, where she offers webinar trainings for nutritionists, dietitians, and other clinicians. www.innovativehealing.com You can learn more about her related academic programs here: www.muih.edu

Functional gastroenterologist Dr. Kenneth Brown, looks at the bigger picture including food and herbs to heal America’s ill guts.

The gut has been called the 2nd brain, the mother ship of our health, the seat of our immune system, and the place where we get our authentic gut instinct—if all is working well. But if your gut is ill, “all” of you can feel miserable. This is difficult to appreciate if you haven’t experienced serious gut issues. But millions have.

  • 60-70 million Americans suffer with gastrointestinal disease
  • 240,000 deaths yearly from severe gastrointestinal disease (this number is similar to the number of breast cancer diagnoses in 2016 and double that of colon cancer)
  • $141 billion dollars was spent in 2004 on gut illness

Health starts in the gut. Many respectable research institutions are proclaiming and demonstrating this. But Americans are having more and more gut issues and worse and worse overall health. We have the first generation of kids who are forecasted to die earlier than their parent’s generation.

Dr. Ken Brown admits that gastroenterology has insufficient tools to meet the demands and disease needs of our increasing ill Americans. That’s why he is the first gut doc, who used to design pharmaceuticals, to now recommend diet, herbs and even CBD oil.

Dr. Ken Brown received his medical degree from the University of Nebraska Medical School, and completed his fellowship in Gastroenterology in San Antonio Texas. He is a board certified gastroenterologist who has been in practice for the past 15 years. His clinical focus has been on inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome.

For the last 10 years Dr. Brown has been conducting clinical research for various pharmacologic companies. During this time, he saw the unmet need for something natural that could help his IBS patients find real relief. After working on the development of Atrantil for over 6 years Atrantil launched in 2015.

Dr. Brown and his research team developed Atrantil with the intent of helping those suffering from the symptoms of IBS which we now know are caused by bacterial overgrowth. Dr. Brown shares how the application of Atrantil has expanded (when combined with diet, other herbs and functional medicine protocols) to include inflammatory bowel disease as well as a bucket list of other serious gut conditions often thought to either have no answers or require life long meds or surgery. Dr. Brown shares that he regularly gets his patients off drugs or into remission, rather rapidly, by these natural means, without meds or surgery.

This is a dynamic, informative and inspiring 1-1/2 hour show.

Lisa Tamati is a best selling author of “Running Hot” and “Running To Extremes.”

She is all about never giving up and taking yourself to new levels no matter what the odds. Lisa is an ultra marathoner. She runs. Across deserts and up at crazy high heights. Even though she has broken her neck and back and was told she should never run and could never run. She’s an asthmatic with much less lung capacity than you or me. But Lisa doesn’t give up. Never. She shares how she trains her brain to approach her world like this. She launched a new mind set course so that anyone from athletes to a regular Jane or Joe can learn the mind set steps that she has developed to have the motivation to get you to wherever you dream to go.

To show you how much you should (don’t you hate being ‘should upon’) never give up, is the story of Lisa’s other half (not her handsome fireman husband) but her mum (as they say down under in New Zealand where Lisa lives). Her mother had both a brain aneurysm and stroke and lost all ability to walk, talk and was  unconscious in a coma. Against all odds, Lisa shares exactly how she got her mother back. Her mother, Isabel, is now walking, talking and more normal than you or I.

So much of life is having more tools in your tool bag. The critical tool of rebooting your mind set to not take the negativity and doom and gloom of others, but be able to pioneer your own success and courage, this is the stuff that allows you to soar above the clouds rather than merely surviving in the rain beneath them.

This show is a dynamic conversation between two women who have faced so many odds, and not only came out even, both have came out filled with life, health, hope and a huge connection to the powerful beat of life itself.

Today’s culture of eating too much in front of the TV, being told you have a disease you have to stay on meds for life, being told it’s their fault so sue them and get what you deserve, all trains us for learned helplessness and entitlement.

Looking for others for what you might be, keeps the emphasis on might.

Looking to yourself for what you can be, allows the emphasis to be on hope.

Your life is up to you. No matter the odds, how you were raised, how you were traumatized or your specific limiting diagnosis, in actuality, so much of your world is how you make it. This is of course, easy to say and  yet not easy for many to do.

However, after you hear this show, your tool bag will have many more exact tools for you to be what you would love to be.

Lisa shared that when her Dad discussed their need to initiate funeral details to plan for her mom’s death, Lisa looked at him and proclaimed, “As long as you have breath, you fight. You fight for her life. Not plan for her death.”

As long as you have breath, you fight for what dream you want to come true.

But like any fighter has to train, if you want the motivation to do great things, you need to train for your life as though your life depended on it.

This inspiring motivational show will leave you feeling grateful and hopeful to alive, no matter the details of what has been bogging you down. You will get some very exact, practical tools to reset your mindset and motivation immediately and authentically.  As well as a bunch of true belly laughs along the way. This show is exciting, rousing, touching and fun. All wrapped into an hour and 20+ minutes for your listening inspiration.

People often believe that just because certain nutrients are healthy, that the more we take the healthier we will be. But this is not necessarily the case. In fact, taking too many supplements, or the wrong combinations or in the wrong timing, can work against your health efforts. For all the money you are spending and the effort you are putting into trying to be healthier, you can actually be making yourself sicker.

Taking supplements safely and effectively is a highly misunderstood nutritional art and science. For example, there are acidic vs. alkaline supplements. How you take them, even the timing of when you take them with food, matters. There are also “pro-oxidative” and “anti-oxidative” nutraceuticals. A balance between the two may make a huge difference in your healing journey and efforts to become well or stay well.

On this show Drs. Brownstein and Berkson share their combined 70 years of clinical experience with using supplements in functional medicine practice. This is a power packed show with empowering knowledge that many patients and doctors alike are not educated about.

David Brownstein, M.D. is a board-certified family physician who combines conventional and alternative therapies.  He is the Medical Director for the Center for Holistic Medicine in West Bloomfield, MI.  He is a graduate of the University of Michigan (and so is Berkson) and Wayne State University School of Medicine.  Dr. Brownstein is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and a serves on the board for the International College of International Medicine.

Dr. Brownstein has lectured internationally about his success using natural therapies. He has also authored fourteen books: Iodine: Why You Need It, Why You Can’t Live Without It, 5th Edition; Vitamin B12 for Health; Drugs That Don’t Work and Natural Therapies That Do, 2nd Edition; The Miracle of Natural Hormones, 3rd Edition; Overcoming Thyroid Disorders, 3rd Edition; Overcoming Arthritis; Salt Your Way to Health, 2nd Edition; The Guide To Healthy Eating, 2nd Edition; The Guide to a Gluten-Free Diet, 2nd Edition; The Guide to a Dairy-Free Diet; The Soy Deception; The Skinny on Fats; The Statin Disaster; and Ozone: The Miracle Therapy.

Dr. Catherine Hansen is a board certified gynecologist with a fellow in intimacy, hormones and menopause. She discusses the most common problem in her practice: that women are globally exhausted and overwhelmed, which seeds diverse disease. She discusses mindfulness in life and how that feeds the body. You can only have with another person (spouse, kids, office mates, friends) that which you have with yourself. If you are on empty inside, all your relationships suffer. With simple 5 minute steps that we discuss you can turn this around. We each have inside ourselves natural pharmacy cornucopia that we can access to gain energy, balance and health. We discuss how to do this by yourself, for yourself, for you own health and the health of all your relationships.

There are many good things about medicine, and many things not so good. If you need an emergency room, or a life-saving surgery, or a new hip or your cataracts removed, wow, medicine is miraculous. But if you have a chronic illness like migraines, heart disease, autoimmune diseases like Rheumatoid arthritis or Multiple Sclerosis, Chronic Fatigue, cognitive decline and the list goes on and on, medicine mostly offers you meds and more meds and more meds. And it convinces you of a reality of ‘learned helplessness’— that you have a disease that will never go away and your answer is to be velcroed to a conveyor belt of meds.

Now, sometimes meds are life saving. But for many chronic illness, they are often mainly addressing the symptoms of the constellation of issues you are suffering. Rarely are they aimed at getting you completely well. And off meds. And healthier than ever.

You and your practitioner accept that you have a chronic disease, be it type-2 diabetes or severe asthma. You walk around with many meds in your purse; your medicine cabinet and you buy into the concept that you have this inevitable illness and that’s your fate.

But a new medicine is starting to emerge. It’s been happening behind the scenes for about 4 decades now. More and more doctors are leaving the” fold” as they learn that by spending time to do a life review of a patient’s story (very in-depth history that looks at your whole life) they can often unveil hidden causes of your illness.  When these issues, or root causes, are addressed and fixed, if the patient makes the necessary positive changes, opportunities emerge of getting rid of these illnesses once and for all.

I recently had Dr. William Davis on the show. Dr. Davis (best selling author of “Undoctored; how health care has failed you and how to be smarter than your doctor) shared his story.  He had been a regular cardiologist and surgeon dispensing meds and performing procedures and making lots of money for his hospitals. But his patients were not getting healthier. They were maintained.

Once he learned the amazing role of diet, nutrients and improved life style choices, he found he could turn around serious heart disease very rapidly, even in patients on the verge of needing a heart transplant. Dr. Davis got the patients (who would take and act on his advice) to remove most carbs, clean up their diet adding in healthy fats and lots of veggies, along with supplying specific restorative nutrients. His patients ultimately did not need statins or procedures. Instead of being maintained on a long list of meds, and staying ‘ill’, they get healthier than ever, off all meds, and reversed their aging and their nasty heart conditions.

But the hospitals weren’t making the same amount of money from this new way of addressing healing. Medicine is a big business and it is built to run on lots of procedures. There’s a huge conflict here.

Getting at root cause takes time. Often the provider taking that time charges cash, but you have an opportunity to finally get well.  Root cause often means you have to make a lot of proactive changes in your life style choices. Not all patients want to put that energy and change into their life, to get that wellness out. We all get to choose.

Dr. David Brownstein was on my show. He was a non-believer and thought functional medicine was a hoax. His father had been ill for years suffering with heart pain (angina) and on many meds and never really being a well man. As he aged he got worse and looked and felt like his time was soon up. Due to meeting a functional doctor who gave Dr. Brownstein one of Dr. Wright’s health books (my first mentor), David put his father on hormone replacement. Bioidentical hormones are actually therapy for treating as well as preventing many diseases, such as cardiovascular issues like David’s dad has been suffering. Dr. Wright discussed the existence of subclinical hypothyroidism (blood labs look normal but symptoms shout out loud that the thyroid is ill).  In med school, most docs aren’t trained to look more at the patient than at the laboratory. David got his dad on testosterone (one root cause of his heart illness was his excessively low heart protective testosterone). He was also put on thyroid replacement, which also protects the heart as well as blood fat levels. David cleaned up his Dad’s diet, getting gluten and dairy out and more veggies in.

David’s father had been ill for decades. But once the underlying causes were sleuthed out and fixed, David’s father got off all his meds, got rid of his angina, and started to feel younger even though he was older. Most of the time, addressing the right root causes (often there are more than one), gets the patient well… rapidly.

Our health care system has created a guilty combo, where the docs hand out meds and the patient doesn’t have to make life improvements. They have more and more pills line their bedside table, but they don’t achieve getting really vibrant and well.

Today’s pharmaceutical based system has Vulcan mind-melded “learned helplessness” into us, rather than going for the cure. The real cure. Getting fully well.

Off as many meds as possible. And achieving truly unstoppable amazing wellness.

This means we look at what you were doing before you got ill, what meds and nutrients you are on, what you are eating, what are your exposures (infections, Lyme, mold, etc.), food reactivity’s, nutrient and/or hormone insufficiencies, gut wellness or not (the gut is the mothership of much of our health) and even exercise, time spent sitting versus time spent pushing yourself in a healthy way, and certainly what we put into our mouths at every fork in the road.

How you live holds a lot of answers for what got you ill and how to get you really well.

Berkson shares her own story of root cause. She reminds us that nature is generous. Your body is designed to heal. But you and your smart plus heart functional team have to figure out your weakest links, what you may be doing in your life, or exposed to in your life, or deficient in your diets or thoughts, that is not letting your body heal you. The point is not to be maintained as a more fragile progressively sicker person, but to get you well.

But it does take elbow grease. On the doc’s part. And on yours.

Berkson inspires you with the words written over the door of her gym, Pure Austin, that she instructs her cells to embrace, remember and live: “Never, never, never give up!”

We think if we have hormonal problems, we sensibly need to see an endocrinologist or gynecologist. But it turns out, today, that not many people, even doctors, get hormones right. Dr. Monaco explains this stunning reality in medicine, in-depth.

Very few doctors have been trained in how to assess for hormonal imbalances, how to treat, how long to treat, and to appreciate the emerging broad swath of hormonal protective actions that occur all throughout the human body. Too many doctors practice extremely antiquated medicine, especially in terms of the world of hormone therapies.

Hormones are not just about sexy or reproductive actions. They are not just about issues in middle or later age.

Just a few examples:

  • Testosterone protects against premature death in males.
  • It also protects against prostate disease.
  • It protects against heart disease in women.
  • In both genders hormones are major brain protectors.
  • Estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone, even oxytocin, all, in both genders, help ward off depression, anxiety and even dementia.
  • DHEA makes your skin look shinier and younger.
  • Melatonin fights cancer, not just insomnia.
  • Estrogen receptor beta signals protect against breast and prostate cancer.
  • In contrast, receptor beta signals in excess, promote heart disease.
  • Thus, hormones must be in optimal ‘goldilocks’ ranges.
  • Laboratory norms based on populations of regular people are often not the best way to assess the best hormone levels for you and me.
  • Many women are told after a hysterectomy, to only take estrogen, never progesterone, as they don’t have a uterus. Wrong! Old ignorant thinking. Still practiced. Who loses out? You!

Many women’s ovaries after any abdominal surgery don’t work as well, yet these women rarely have their hormones tracked, or replacement considered.

Dementia is on the rise. Bioidentical hormone replacement should also then, be on the rise. Why? Hormones protect our brain. They even tamp down susceptibility genes, like APOE4 for Alzheimer’s, meaning they really protect the brain. The Department of Neurology at UCLA is reversing mild to moderate cases of dementia (in 3 to 6 months!) and what is one of their major tools? Hormone replacement!

Do we hear about this much? No. Why? Because the scientists are UCLA are reversing dementia without big drugs.  They are using nutrients, herbs, diet and hormones. That won’t work. Because medicine has become a lot about drugs. A profession that hands out drugs. And casts suspicion upon drugless therapies.

If there are more inexpensive but helpful, effective answers, like nutrients and hormones, those often aren’t recommended. In fact, a doctor may lose his or her position in a team practice if they recommend these tools to their patients. Even if they know they work, are less expensive and have less dangers. Why? Medicine is drugs. The doctors write the scripts. But you are part of the issue, too. If you keep going to the trough and keep getting more drugs, you too are contributing to this enlarging, dangerous and unprecedented problem.

To age without hormone assessment and individual replacement, is to miss out on this personalized medicine that is amazingly protective on so many levels. Women don’t realize that many women on bioidentical hormone therapies have less risk of breast cancer, not more.

Hormones are as close to anti-aging miracles as you can get. Many of the symptoms of aging, like aches, pains, poorer memory, wimpier muscles, getting fatter, getting old lady and man voice, losing lung power, and more, are greatly due to hormonal waning. And can be reversed, rather rapidly, by hormonal replacement.

Alas, too many doctors don’t realize this perspective or wide range of actions of hormones. They do not see hormones as “preventative” or “treatment” tools. But just because they don’t read or know about the vast literature that substantiates this viewpoint, does not mean they’re right. Or that you should lose out.

Dr. Monaco shares how he went from a baby delivering, New Jersey raised, tough guy, softhearted gynecologist, to a bioidentical hormone and integrative physician.

Dr. M is in a team practice with a world famous integrative cardiologist, Dr. Mark C. Houston in Nashville, Tenn.  Dr. Monaco lectures worldwide on how hormones protect against heart disease, a major killer for both sexes, as we grow older.

Dr. M trains doctors in how hormones protect us against many ills often regarded as inevitable, but which often are results of email freeze from hormonal signals. And these issues are often rapidly fixed, if treated by a smart foreword-thinking doctor like Jack!

William Davis MD. Best-Selling Author of Wheat Belly and Undoctored: Why HealthCare Has Failed You And How To Be Smarter Than Your Doctor.  Dr. Davis was one of the first physicians to point out the many potential nasty health effects of wheat and carbs on our waistlines and our hearts.

Dr. William R. Davis is a Milwaukee-based American cardiologistknown for his health crusading stance against "modern day wheat”which he labels as "perfect, chronic poison” and also calls it Frankenwheat” – a toxic and addictive substance that makes people want to eat more, binge on junk food, and eventually ruins their cardiovascular systems and lives.

Williams says that once he discovered the power of food, he could take seriously ill heart patients and turn them around within a very short period of time, based solely on a combination of improved diet and nutraceuticals. Medical money to be made, William reminds us, is in procedures and meds. In contrast, to morph “ill” to “fully recovered” is about what we put into our mouths.

On The Dr. Oz Show, Dr. William was one of the first medical doctors to tell the American public that the wheat of today is nothing like the wheat of 1960’s or the 1950’s. Wheat has changed. It’s not the wheat our moms or grandmothers ate.

New wheat crops have implications for human health that had never been anticipated.

None of us should be eating grains. Forget the folklore that oatmeal is good for your cholesterol. The less grains, the stronger your heart. When we go off grains we hurt less, we achieve thinner waists, get energy back no matter our age, and we heal our heart tissue and basic heart cell, the all important cardiomyocyte.

Williams used to make a lot of money for the hospitals he worked for with stents and procedures and meds, all of which kept patients velcored to accept “learned helplessness”, and never really got them well. So much medicine for chronic care, keeps people ill.

Dr. Williams says that most doctors enter medicine to make the pot of money at the end of the rainbow. The status quo of medicine does not recognize diet because it doesn’t cost anything to try it. Williams feels it is not until the doctors that practice this antiquated way, die out, and make room for younger doctors that are trained and weaned on getting folks well by using food to largely do so, that we will see the change in chronic care medicine that has to take place.

Dr. William’s is author of the #1 New York Times Bestseller, Wheat Belly: Lose the wheat, lose the weight and find your path back to health. His other books are:  Wheat Belly Total Health, Wheat Belly 10-Day Grain Detox, and others!

Dr. Nathan is one of the top American medical experts on mold toxin infections and eradicating them. Dr. Nathan has been in practice over 40 years and into taking a look at the link between serious chronic disease and hidden cases of mold (that often go undiagnosed for a long time) for 22 years. Dr. Nathan says many cases of Lyme or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome that are not responsive to care, is due to an overriding ongoing mold infection that has not be identified or treated effectively.

Dr. Nathan says that when he addresses mold and effectively heals it within months (in most cases), often the other diseases a patient endured, starts to respond to care.

Twenty-five percent of humans have genetic glitches (which you can test at most labs with an HLADR panel) that do not allow them to clear mold toxins out of their body once exposed.  Mold easily proliferates in their body as they can’t get rid of it. They could have had an exposure years ago that is still with them, still growing inside them, yet they are not aware that this is happening. Most of their doctors don’t know this is happening either.

Dr. Nathan has been healing so many chronic sufferers once he addresses the mold issues, that now he is focuses on education. Dr. Nathan consults all over the world. He encourages the patient to be on the phone along with their practitioner. Since so few doctors understand the nuances of mold toxin medicine, it is his hope to train the doc while he is helping the patient. For no extra charge. All he charges is an hourly fee.

Symptoms of mold toxicity vary widely from patient to patient. They can be so divergent, the patient treks from doctor to doctor, addressing each symptom with a different specialist, and none of the doctors connect-the-dots to possible mold toxin infections.

Mold fungi can release toxic compounds that can enter any organ system. They enter various tissues in the body and release inflammatory cytokines. These can produce different symptoms depending on the tissues affected. Significant cognitive dysfunction is one of the most common cardinal symptoms.

Inflammation can occur in the limbic area of the brain creating intense emotions. The person can feel that they are walking around in a dream. There can be shifting symptoms. There can be severe asthma that is not easily controlled, recurrent sinus infections, and all kinds of gut issues from abdominal pain to bloat and crashing fatigue after meals. It is not uncommon to have unusual numbness and tingling in odd places that sometimes feel like vibrations in muscles, joints ad even in the pelvis and bladder.

The best testing, Dr. Nathan feels, is urine mycotoxins from Real Time Labs.

Dr. Nathan feels that this has been a very useful tool in his practice even though others have regarded it as non-specific, he disagrees.

Treatment has 4 parts:

  1. Find where or when you got exposed and get out of there.
  2. Use binders to help remove the toxins out of the body.
  3. Use anti-fungals specific to the exact species you harbor.
  4. Treat all orifices adequately.

You must analyze your home, work and even your car to find the source and get away from it. You might need to move out of your home till it is remediated by a certified company (not the same one that is doing the testing to avoid conflict of interest), and even need to buy new cloth furniture. Most clothes can be remediated.

Papers can be a problem.

Air sampling does not work.  Don’t get landlords to test if you have mold in an apartment as they use air sampling because it doesn’t work and then they are not held responsible.

Spores have weight and fall to the carpet. They are not in the air to be able to be adequately tested there. You need to get 5 grams of carpet dust and get PCR testing of 36 different species by an expert that is trained and licensed in doing this.

Dr. Nathan reminds us, though, that if you can’t clear mold toxins out of your body, your present mold issues may not be from your current environments and then testing your home, car or office is not appropriate. Drat.

You need binders to grab the mold and pull it out of your body. There are various binders and  like charcoal, bentonite,  cholestyramine and others. Once you know which mold species you have, specific binders work best for specific species. Few doctors know this but Dr. Nathan will share this with your doctor if you have a joint visit.

You must know which molds you have so you can be on the right anti-fungals to treat them. You must treat every single place that mold can be settled in and growing. So the anti-fungal medication that is appropriate for the species you are growing, which can be several, needs to be sprayed inside your nostrils, gargled, taken orally and sometimes even in other nooks and crannies. You have to de-weed your body thoroughly.

Most doctors, even if they treat mold, don’t find the exact species and then do not address all the places of possible contamination and proliferation.  Dr. Nathan says the more consistent the nasal and oral treatment, the better and faster the improvement.

You also need biofilm hackers. Dr. Nathan has a compounding pharmacy combine EDTA and xylitol into a nasal spray. Molds often create a glue-like matrix around themselves to protect themselves. So you can use various nutratceuticals or meds to hack through the goo and allow the anti-fungals to reach the fungi and kill the mold.

Dr. Nathan had his own radio show/podcast with Voice America called "The Cutting Edge of Health and Wellness Today" which are archived and easily accessed through his website, www.neilnathanmd.com  under Radio Shows.

Wendy Myers is known as the “Detox Guru”. In this show we go into detox in step-by-step detail and show how heavy metal toxicity is linked to severe fatigue and hormonal issues, which is why detox is a critical answer for many who are not getting well by typical medical interventions. Wendy is the founder of Liveto110.com and MineralPower.com, which both emphasize toxic metal and mineral-testing protocols with individualized detox and mineral replacement programs to overcome fatigue and reverse diverse illnesses. Wendy recently had Dr. Joseph Mercola on her podcast and is presently treating him with her unique combination of individualized detox protocols along with the NES Bioenergetic programs. Meyers consults internationally out of Los Angeles, Ca. Meyers wrote the #1 best seller: Limitless Energy: How to Detox Toxic Metals to End Exhaustion and Chronic Fatigue. She uses “hair mineral analysis” and other functional tests to design customized programs to treat severe fatigue, resistant weight problems and hormonal imbalances. These protocols are especially helpful to regain energy, improve cognition, and balance adrenal and thyroid function. Meyer’s body of research can be found on her hundreds of articles on her websites. In 2018, she is launching the Detox Institute to teach practitioners how to properly use and interpret toxic metal hair, stool and urine tests. Heavy metal toxicity is an unappreciated major cause of various serious illnesses such as chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. Wendy discusses her favorite detox protocols and gives her favorite simple tips. She gives details about how she uses “info-ceuticals.” Metals make mitochondria dysfunctional. Mitochondria are where human energy is produced.  Mitochondria require enzymes. These enzymes use nutrients to “feed” Krebs cycle activities that produce energy (ATP). Heavy metals block these enzymes and thus paralyze mitochondrial energy production. Part of rebooting energy is clearing heavy metals out of mitochondria and replacing the with specific minerals. Wendy explains the mercury toxicity link to hormonal issues from PCOS to miscarriage and also discusses how lead disrupts healthy estrogen signaling. Wendy has kindly made a great offer for YOU. She is giving away free eBooks for my listeners at this address https://liveto110.com/free  This was a super show on everything you wanted to know about detox but didn’t know who to ask.

Dr. Daniel Ruan Surgeon discussing, “One of the Most Undiagnosed Deadly Diseases." Only “fixed” by a 20-minute surgical procedure. It is too often undiagnosed and missed, even by well-intentioned doctors. This disease is primary hyperparathyroidism.

Common symptoms of primary hyperparathyroidism are: fatigue, feeling older than your chronological age, chronic heart burn, aches and pains, brain fog, personality changes such as increased irritability, depression, lack of motivation, insomnia and even feeling hopeless. But, it can occur without any symptoms, too.

Primary hyperparathyroidism is commonly linked (signs) to bone loss, kidney stones, pancreatitis, irregular heart beats severe esophageal reflux. It’s diagnosed, ideally, by elevated blood calcium levels, anywhere in the 10’s of mg/dL. If your blood calcium comes back at 10.2 on a regular basis, but your doctor says that’s normal.  After listening to this show you will understand the nuances of diagnosing this serious health issue, probably better than your doctor.

Any person who gets kidney stones, has bone loss, chronic reflux, or even a single case of pancreatitis, should be evaluated for this condition—primary hyperparathyroidism. But, alas, this life-threatening disorder often goes undiagnosed even by your trusty doctor and endocrinologist. There is a lot of misunderstanding out in the clinical trenches surrounding this disease. This includes diagnosis as well as treatment. But this show clears the air on every single level so you will achieve a grounded understanding of this condition by the end of this hour.

What exactly is primary hyperparathyroidism? It’s when a benign tumor grows on one or more of four tiny glands that surround your thyroid gland. Since “para” means “to surround”, and these glands are located around your thyroid gland, which sits like a bow-tie organ at the base of your throat, these glands are labeled your parathyroid glands. You have four of them. But these glands have nothing to do with your thyroid functioning.

Parathyroid glands rule your calcium dynamics. Calcium’s actions are famous for being linked to bone health. But calcium’s influence is much more global than only bone formation. Calcium dictates the entire electrical circuitry throughout your body. Thus when calcium, which should be very tightly controlled in the blood, goes too high or too low, many diverse symptoms can occur.

In hyperparathyroidism, one or more parathyroid glands become over-active. They secrete excessive amounts of parathyroid hormone. This makes blood calcium levels go too high. In the 10’s. A children has fast growing bone, so kids and young adults can safely have calcium levels in the 10’s. But not once we become adults.

Elevated blood levels of calcium are a deadly scenario. Calcium can get clogged in brain tissue, causing cognitive issues. Calcium is pulled out of the bones and can deposit in the heart, in blood vessels, in the kidneys, and in other organs, causing early aging and premature organ damage and even premature death. Calcium is a signaling molecule in the cells that secrete stomach acid (parietal cells) so there can commonly be severe reflux.

The patient may be put on anti-depressants, antacids, go through multiple kidney stone procedures, and trek from psychologist to psychiatrist trying to figure out why they feel so gloomy and forlorn. When all the while it may be an insidious silent condition that is only treated by a short and non-invasive small incision in the throat under twilight to removed the “offending” non-cancerous (but deadly) tumor.

Yet, very few surgeons are trained in this minimally invasive technique designed by Dr. James Norman, the head of the Norman Parathyroid Center on the 6th floor of the Tampa General Hospital, nicknamed the “Parathyroid Palace”. This is where Dr. Ruan is part of this amazing, one of a kind, surgical team. There is no other surgical clinic in the world that only deals with parathyroid disease. Every staff member knows all there is to know about these four glands, the parathyroid's. No other surgical center focuses only on these endocrine organs alone.

Berkson has referred many patients to the Norman clinic, where Dr. Ruan came to be one of their highly trained surgeons after already being a surgeon at the prestigious Harvard Medical Center for eight years. Berkson has shadowed the surgeons at this center and knows first hand how life-saving this diagnosis and simple surgery can be. And we also discuss how too easily the patient can miss being appropriately diagnosed, or be wrongly diagnosed, or even go through a surgery that leaves them worse off or doesn’t address all the involved glands.

There are a lot of surgeons out in the wild who do not have the experiential base to thoroughly assess and treat this often misunderstood issue: primary hyperparathyroidism.

Dr. Ruan shares his most striking cases. One woman was catatonic and couldn’t speak and within hours of the tumor on her parathyroid gland being removed, she could talk for the first time in a long while. One person was wheel chair bound for an extended time, yet by the second day after surgery with Dr. Ruan, they were walking!

This short surgery can be so life altering that Dr. Ruan became a bit teary-eyed while sharing these experiences. This show is touching and oh so informative.

One of the huge take-homes from this amazing show is how easy it is to go to good doctors and great community surgeons and still not get the best care or even the accurate diagnosis. Berkson and Ruan detail all the issues to carefully watch out for to protect yourself and those you love. Remember, no one will ever care about your health as much as you will.

This show gives life saving information on a too poorly understood issue that many doctors don’t catch. Yet it can make someone loose years off their life. This is a must- hear and must-share show!
