Listening improves connection and success in personal, business and even political relationships.

Listening

The ability to “listen” creates more successful relationships in every aspect of life. But most of us have no idea of how to do it. Most of us do not listen with an intent to “understand”. Many of us merely listen with the intent to “reply”.

Enter Center Stage: Mike Carr

Mike has been lecturing, for decades, throughout the country on “listening” and leadership” for big industry, states associations and even in political realms. He has been a winning speaker many times over for Toast Master’s International. Along with Dr. Berkson, he is a member of “Where Laughing Really Matters” a unique toastmaster club focusing on comedy.

A Critical Art

Listening is a critical art, not taught in schools and most homes. This is a time in history when we need to learn how to “listen” to each other better and authentically. Then, we can create more unity and humanitarian successes versus remaining polarized and more prone to chaos.

A good listener is developed through easy, exact steps. Once you know them you will be astonished as to why you never figured them out nor practiced them… up till now.

In this show you will learn:

  • The benefit of “silence” and how to use it.
  • The art of “questioning”.
  • How to listen as an active life tool of “connection”.
  • How listening contributes toward being the best parent, partner, manager, or entrepreneur.
  • How listening helps you be more “grounded” inside yourself.
  • How blind spots “snag” you back or move your forward.

This show is a soothing yet enlightening conversation between colleagues. This easy-listening show holds simple answers to complex communications issues. You can use these steps instantaneously to create more wins and harmony within your own life and family.

Heart disease is the number one killer for both men and women. Often, we are told our only answer is medication, more medication…  and to avoid salt.

However, if you understand more about why your cardiovascular system is ill, for example if you have some faulty cardiac genes, or a chamber is faulty and causing “nocturnal” hypertension, then you often can fix it. Especially if you work with a doctor that understands the heart from these points of view.

Enter center stage. Dr. Mark Houston. Dr. Houston is renowned as the “iconic functional cardiologist” who put functional cardiology on the map.

Functional cardiology looks for “root causes” of hypertension and heart disease, such as the specific molecules that create heart damage. The patient is then guided toward making improvements in lifestyle, sleep, blood pressure throughout 24/hours, diet and medications to bring them back to heart health once again.

Dr. Houston created the only “functional cardiology certification course” for medical doctors taught at A4M, the Anti-Aging Certification Course.  He teaches all 24-hours himself. Dr. Houston has authored a number of textbooks for cardiologists as well as books for everyday patients.

The Hypertension Institute in Nashville, where Dr. Berkson goes for her look-see heart health exams is run by Dr. Houston. Dr. Houston is tripled boarded in hypertension as an American Society of Hypertension (ASH) specialist and Fellow of the American Society of Hypertension (FASH), Internal Medicine (ABIM) and Anti-aging medicine (ABAARM).

Nutrition is a subject taken seriously by Dr. Houston. He has a master’s degree in Human Nutrition from the University of Bridgeport, Connecticut and a Master of Science degree in Functional and Metabolic Medicine from the University of South Florida in Tampa. Dr. Houston was an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.

Dr. Houston has spent his life learning how to figure out the “root cause” of heart disease and high blood pressure and how to individualize natural answers to keep us living longer, healthier and on less medications.

In this show you will learn:

  • Differences between blood pressure medications.
  • Which ones do not work very well.
  • Why many patients just don’t get better and what we can do about it.
  • Molecules of mass destruction that “drive” heart disease and how to test and naturally treat these.
  • What is “nocturnal hypertension” and why should your doctor test for this.
  • And more.

Dr. Houston and Dr. Berkson are colleagues and both are professors for A4M so this conversation is between friends as well as agile thinkers.

You will learn how Dr. Houston’s approach integrates the whole person‚ mind, body and spirit. You will be surprised at the in-depth manner in which his team evaluates the heart, the lining of your blood vessels and even blood pressure analysis.

What is Organic?

We hear a lot about organic foods these days. What are they? Are organic foods from Whole Foods, farmers’ markets, Walmart, and the organic food section of your local grocery store all the same?

What is soil biome and what does healthy microbial life in soil have to do with the biomes in our colon, lungs, or sinuses?

How do plants direct which nutrients “gather round their roots” to create the heathiest microbial life?

Eliot Coleman answers these questions in his interview with Dr. Berkson, an interview between two long-time friends.

Eliot Coleman and Four Seasons Farm

Eliot Coleman is an American organic farmer, author, researcher and educator. Eliot along with Scott Nearing, PhD, is credited with helping farmers and all of us become aware of authentic organic gardening: what it is, how it benefits life, and how the FDA has sold out to big Agra lobbies . . . even when it comes to organic labeling. OMG! It’s just like medicine! His book, The New Organic Groweris a “bible” for organic farmers, especially those who sell to our food markets.

Coleman has been gardening since the Sixties, when he bought 60 acres of land from Scott Nearing for $33 an acre and turned it into Four Seasons Farms. The farm is in Penopscott Bay, an inlet of the Gulf of Maine and the Atlantic Ocean, in south central Maine. Coleman’s gardens produce 50 different vegetables, even artichokes. He grows them “just to make the Californians nervous.”

Moments in Time

Dr. Berkson lived with the Nearings and Colemans for several years, sleeping in the Coleman’s woodshed at night while learning organic gardening and building rock garden walls and log cabins by day. Berkson and a tall mysterious boat maker named Brent felled the trees one year, let them dry, and then hand-scythed them the following year to build the log cabin. They made the filling in-between the logs out of sphagnum moss gathered from local fields and pebbles from the shoreline, hand mixed together with cement in wheel barrels. In this interview, Berkson was shocked to learn that the cabin still exists; it was moved to another part of the Colemans’ land and is now the formal “guest house” for visitors from all around the world. She has learned, though, that the root-cellar she dug by hand, by candle light at night to get finished before the first huge snows, chronically leaked.

Coleman in Washington DC

Coleman started writing and going to Washington to educate big Agra, serving two years as Executive Director of the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM). He advised the U.S. Department of Agriculture from 1979–80, with input into the document that formed the basis of today's legislated National Organic Program (2002) in the U.S.—the Report and Recommendations on Organic Farming. The program has since become unfortunately diluted by big business. “Organic” labeling now allows inclusion of hydroponics and many plants not really raised organically, especially most berries and tomatoes you find labeled organic, even at markets like Whole Foods.

Back in Maine

The Four Seasons Farm is across the Bay from two islands once owned by Bucky Fuller. Bucky’s islands housed organic gardens, composting toilets, geodesic domes, and hosted experiments held by international scientists. Way back when, Berkson hung out with thinkers like Bucky (along with her boyfriend at the time, Hans Meyers, an astrophysicist who later became president of The Buckminster Fuller Institute. He also designed the water turbines of Austin, the city in Texas where Berkson now lives.)

In those years, Nearing and Berkson (along with many international visitors) gathered rocks from the countryside (“uglies and beauties,” as Helen Nearing called them), and built huge garden walls (two-and-a-half feet thick, eight feet high, and two feet into the ground,) which extended the growing season two months on either end. The rocks absorbed the sunlight and transmitted it into the soil and plants. With special tools, Nearing could grow food all year long, despite being in Maine and having one of the shortest growing seasons in the U.S.

Eliot now uses unheated and minimally-heated greenhouses and polytunnels to be able to grow veggie year round in Maine.

Fun Fact

Scott and Helen Nearing wrote the foreword for Berkson’s first book, The Foot Book (Harper Row Publishers, 1979), which sold 750 million copies.

Friends and Truth Grounded in the Earth

This interview between Eliot Coleman and Dr. Berkson is a positive show, just what is needed in the midst of the tsunami of suffering, pain, and misunderstanding that is happening now around our planet. Your whole family, clinic, and neighbors will want to hear the truth about our food, and the noble connection between “good folks” and the earth.

Hear all about Low-Dose Naltrexone from Pam W. Smith, MD, MPH – an Anti-Aging Medicine Specialist.

Dr. Smith is an international expert on LDN and was a guest speaker at the first international LDN conference in Australia in 2019. Dr. Smith created and teaches many of the modules that certify MDs, pharmacists and NPs to become board-certified as functional practitioners. For the past decade Dr. Berkson and Dr. Smith have often lectured together most recently, team teaching a 16-hr. hormone course a few months ago in Salt Lake, City.

Naltrexone is used in high dosages in the ER for drug overdosages.

In smaller dosages (micro amounts to typically 4.5 mg) is referred to as “Low-Dose Naltrexone” known mostly often as its acronym:  LDN.

LDN has many uses. For example LDN: boosts immune function, tamps down unhealthy inflammation, stops cancer tumor growth and metastases, helps auto-immune diseases go into remission, and much more.

Clinical reports on LDN have demonstrated many possible benefits in diverse diseases such as fibromyalgia, Crohn's disease, multiple sclerosis, complex-regional pain syndrome, Hailey-Hailey disease, and cancer.

In this show you will learn:

  • Dose ranges of LDN.
  • How to properly take LDN.
  • The use of ultra-low dosages.
  • LDN use for chronic pain and how it may reduce the need for opioids.
  • How LDN is used adjunctively for MS, RA, and other auto-immune diseases as well as inflammatory bowel diseases.
  • How it works as a promising immunomodulatory agent by binding to opioid receptors in or on immune cells and tumor cells.
  • Why many functional doctors are prescribing it for “all” auto-immune and cancer patients.

Naltrexone is a drug and thus any patient can have a reaction but adverse reactions are very rare.

Make sure to listen to this highly educational show.

Dr. Mary J. Ruwart is a scientist, ethicist, libertarian author/activist and a close girl friend of Dr. Berkson’s. Thus, this show is informative but also down-home; a chat between friends.

Dr. Ruwart has a Ph.D. in Biophysics and was a research scientist at The Upjohn Company involved in developing new therapies for diverse diseases, such as liver cirrhosis and AIDS.

Presently, in Texas, Dr. Ruwart oversees IRB’s which allow peer-research to unfold in proper regulatory pathways.

Dr. Ruwart writes an Internet column, Ask Dr. Ruwart, featured in the Advocates for Self-GovernmentLiberator OnLine” e-zine.

In this show you’ll learn:

  • How the lack of testing kits helped the spread of COVID.
  • Why the CDC’s original testing kits didn’t work.
  • The FDA’s role.
  • The official “change” of the FDA in 1962 and how this effects each one of us.
  • How each of us, the average person, can have some input.
  • What the average person can do to help solve some of these problems.

Dr. Ruwart wrote a must-have book on how the FDA got to be what it is today, called  Death By Regulation: How We Were Robbed of a Golden Age of Health and How We Can Reclaim It.

COVID-19 has now been reported in every continent but Antarctica. We have no standard treatment nor time for randomized trials to test treatments in accepted scientific manner.

In this show you learn about a team of 8 physicians throughout the country, including seasoned ER doctors, ICU physicians and critical care providers, who got together and created a protocol based on various published anti-viral interventions. In their facilities this protocol is saving lives.

Their very ill COVID-19 patients given their specific protocol in the ER, in a specific manner of timing, are not progressing to need ventilators, are passing through the disease process faster with seemingly with less downstream permanent tissue damage.

Dr. Berkson interviews one of these physicians, Dr. Keith Berkowitz.

Dr. Berkowitz is an internist. Dr. Berkowitz was on the teaching faculty at North Shore University and New York University School of Medicine for many years. In addition, Dr. Berkowitz consulted with Island Peer Review Organization in New Hyde Park, New York, overseeing quality management. He has been a reviewer of questions for certification boards of the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Berkowitz is also a diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners and a member of the American College of Physicians, the Medical Society of State of New York, the Foundation for the Advancement of Innovative Medicine and the American College for Advancement in Medicine.

Dr. Berkowitz is the co-author of Princeton Review’s Medical School Companion (Random House, 1995),

Obviously, Dr. Berkowitz has high standing among allopathic medicine. But, we are fortunate that Dr. Berkowitz also thinks outside the box. “Agile thinking” is a trait greatly needed during this pandemic.

Thinking that lifestyle and nutrition matter, Dr. Berkowitz founded the Center for Balanced Health in New York City.  Before creating this integrative clinic, Dr. Berkowitz was the medical director of the Atkins Center for Complementary Medicine. Dr. Berkowitz also published non-mainstream medical books such as The Stubborn Fat Fix (Rodale, 2009) and The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Flour Free Eating (Alpha Books, 2010).

You can see that Dr. Berkowitz is grounded in allopathic medicine but, in addition, has a functional medicine perspective.

All eight doctors on this new COVID-19 treatment team are aligned in combining the best of both medical worlds.  That’s exactly what they did with this new protocol to treat COVID-19. This medical team of eight combined nutrition, based on research published in China on COVID-19 patients, and added two medications that address the damaging molecular issues of COVID-19.

They developed an intravenous protocol that is administered every 6 hours to patients that are getting very ill from this novel virus. Many of these patients, in the facilities using these protocols, are healing faster and not progressing to the point of needing ventilators. This is a very critical aspect of treating this illness.

Ventilators can be lifesaving, but once a patient is put on ventilators for COVID-19, they have a much higher risk of dying from this disease; the numbers being 56% to 85% risk of fatality depending on the studies you read.

Any protocol that help treat a COVID-19 patient successfully and also enabling avoidance of ventilators is worth learning about.

And passing forward.

You know how the old saying that the “Two Inevitables” are taxes and aging? Well, what if aging, at least as we know it, wasn’t a given?

This show, with one of the world’s experts on anti-aging. Dave Asprey,  is a super dynamic interview about extending your life. Dave is a genius, agile thinker and you get to hear his effective, distinctive array of science-based anti-aging tools.

Dave Asprey has used specific nutrients and off-label use of medications, to pull himself back from being a 300 lb. extremely unhealthy younger male, to now being a middle-aged much more youthful dynamic incomparable male. He did this by “bio-hacking”. In fact, Dave helped put this term—“biohacking”—in Webster’s dictionary and on our human radar.

Bio-hacking is using tools to hack our DNA so we can improve our genes, moving them toward living longer better.

Dave shares with the world his idea that aging is plastic, that it’s encoded. “If something is encoded, you can crack the code.” “If you can crack the code, you can hack the code!”

Governments like China and Russia are investing in “Anti-aging Technologies” as they realize it gives them tremendous competitive advantage? Why shouldn’t you do the same? This show tells how.

In this powerful dialogue between colleagues and friends, you learn:

  • What is biohacking?
  • How you might live longer but do it much like you did in your 20’s.
  • How to use nutrients to keep your tissues and brain younger longer.
  • Which off-label medications “turn on” your brain mitochondria and immune system healing powers, so your lysosomes can clear “pro-aging gunk” out of your cells.
  • You will learn what lysosomes are, and how and why to take care of them.
  • You will learn exact tools to be rich in energy. Energy is everything. Energy is the true currency of life.
  • That it’s not how long you sleep but how well you sleep. The Keck School of Medicine and the American Cancer Society looked at over 1 million adults 30 to 102, how they slept and their mortality rates and those that slept 6.5 hours lived longer and those that slept 8 hours a night died earlier from all causes!
  • Atypical sleep improving hormones and medications!

Dr. Berkson asked Dave, “How can you say in the book that you will live to be 185 years old?”

Dave answered, “At least 185 years old!”

Dave then explains, in detail, exactly how he is living toward that reality every single day.

Dr. Berkson read Super Human at least three times, underlining many pearls guiding us toward a safer, younger future. She proclaimed, "Super Human is one of the best reads I’ve devoured in years".

This is “must-hear” show and a “must-read” book, perfect read for those wanting to know how to be the best that they can possibly be. Super Human has almost 500 peer review citations. It’s based on research but comes from that unique virtuoso Asprey special deep dive.

Biohacking is not just for the ultra-rich or CEO’s of Google - but for you and me. This book should be on your shelves and the information guiding your purchasing of supplements and prescriptions. This year, for the first time, there will be more people on Earth over the age of sixty-five than under the age of five. We need biohacking. You and I need this information and need to take actions based on it.

Do not miss out on this show or book! And don’t miss out on all the other very cool and life enhancing tools from Dave Asprey from Bulletproof mold-free coffee to the best eye-glasses for sleeping and computer use Dr. Berkson has ever used.

Be your best by tuning in, and allowing Bulletproof and Dave Asprey to buttress up your incarnation.

Dr. Leo Galland practices in the epicenter of the worst outbreak of Covid-19 in the US, in Manhattan. He is a board-certified internist and specialist in immunology and Integrative Medicine and has quickly become a medical spokesperson for COVID-19 in NY and the country. In addition, Dr. Galland has authored 40 scientific articles and written chapters for numerous textbooks including Integrative Gastroenterology and Encyclopedia of Human Nutrition.

In this show you will learn:

  • How COVID-19 uses ACE2 receptors to enter the body.
  • How “unhealthy” ACE2 receptors put us at increased risk of getting very ill once infected with COVID-19.
  • Which nutrients support healthy ACE2 receptors.
  • What diseases are linked with unhealthy ACE2 receptors.
  • The role of enabling “furins”.
  • Which dietary flavonoids are protective and what forms are the most absorbable.
  • How social distancing may not only reduce rate of cases but also the virulence and infectivity of this virus.

80% of people that get COVID-19 will not get very ill. 20% go on to get very ill and 5% may die. Our goal is to learn how to become part of the 80% if infected.

You will also learn about biology of viruses and COVID-19 that are not known by many... yet.

Dr. Galland’s practice is grounded in 3 principles:

  1. Search for the root causes of each person’s illness; don’t just suppress symptoms with drugs.
  2. Treat every patient and every illness as unique.
  3. Choose treatments that enhance rather than suppress normal function, whenever possible.

Dr. Galland uses these principles in his approach and description of this global pandemic we are all now facing.

This is a must not miss show.

Pass this on to save lives.

Editor's Note: After the show, Dr. Galland wrote to Dr. Berkson that he loved the interview. “ Great to see you and so good to talk to an intelligent person who understands biology”.

We are at war with the virus that causes the new viral illness, COVID-19.

In this show you hear Dr. Berkson’s theory on the “Gaia Principal” and taking a look at “root cause” of escalating pandemics.

In this show you learn:

  • Four portals of entry of the coronavirus.
  • Suggested tools for prevention in high-risk and low-risk persons.
  • Suggestions for once infected.
  • What is a virus is.
  • Discussion and controversy on this virus and NSAIDs.
  • The main time-frame for human pandemics and how many have died.
  • How pandemics are increasing.
  • What this means for Mother Earth and for each one of us.
  • Why we need to prioritize values of “humanity” and “future generations” more than money and power.
  • Issues with kits, government response, fatality rates and why.

And There Is More!

You will hear exact steps to “flatten the curve” (todays COVID-19 mantra) with specific ways to maintain your immunity.

You learn what sugar does to your immune system and for how long.

We share specific dosages of anti-viral nutrients.

You will hear the names of two new promising drugs that may help halt this coronavirus, and how the underlying mechanism of how they work overlaps with melatonin.

How melatonin may be a critical player to help you stay well.. and why. (I wrote an entire chapter on melatonin in my book, Safe Hormones, Smart Women.)

How the virus binds to ACE2 and the controversy of ACE2 receptors and hypertensive medications.

Remember:

Stay calm. The stress hormone cortisol is immunosuppressive.

We are being asked by the “isness” of this viral reality to live “community” consciousness more than “personal”.

We are all in this together.

Let’s get the message right.

Let’s support the leaders that tell the truth, not manage the truth.

Take Note:

Twenty-percent of U.S. COVID-19 deaths so far have been aged 20 to 64. Kids can get it. They may not die but may be at risk of permanent tissue damage. You can have the virus without symptoms or only digestive ones.

Learn how viruses have consciousness and evolve just like we do. Thus, symptoms and treatments may do the same.

You will learn the “two aspects” of this virus that make it different than what humanity’s immune systems have seen before.

This dangerous virus is here for a while, but our fates are not locked in.

In this show you learn how to take more mastery of your fate.

Dr. Berkson interviews Lisa Tamati about the incredible story told in her new book, “Relentless,” of never giving up and healing from brain injury. Lisa’s mom had a stroke and aneurysm both within 3 days and was given a few weeks to live. But Lisa would not take “no” for an answer.

In ingenious manners, Lisa had her mother go on  hyperbaric oxygen treatments, nutrients and medications. All these boost brain function to return after devastating injury.

Lisa kindly put together a list for our show notes (thanks Lisa!) with all kinds of action-steps, nutrients and even off-label use of meds to help brain trauma patients:

Lisa feels that, “Everyone who has had a brain injury would benefit from:”

  • A sleep apnea assessment.
  • Hyperbaric oxygen tank treatments
  • Exercise to increase BDNF, preferably high intensity interval training
  • Get Pituitary gland checked - hormone production can be impaired by brain injury which can lead to many secondary problems
  • Brain exercises - challenging the brain all the time
  • Get thyroid checked as this can be affected
  • Infrared laser therapy - Photo biomodulation - go vielight.com use code Tamati at Checkout 10% discount on devices

Brain Helpful Supplements:

  • N-Acetyl Cysteine acute dose 2 grams x 2  a day days 1 -4, days 5-7 1.5 gram x a day
  • Fish oil with higher EPA to DHA (must be of highest quality, many oxidize if not processed properly)
  • Alternative to fish oil for omega 3 is spirulina (all around good omega supplement in high dosages (it’s a food not a supplement so can't overdo it ) the best on the market is energybits.com use code Lisa at checkout to get 20% off
  • Chlorella also from energy bits
  • MCT oil  (brain octane oil - Bulletproof  is probably the best)
  • Curcumin for inflammation
  • Vitamin C for inflammation
  • Vitamin D 5000 IU/day
  • Ashwagandha
  • Bacopa Monniere
  • N- Acetyl L-Tyrosine
  • Coenzyme Q10
  • Citicholine
  • Aniracetam (drug but very well tolerated and used for over 6 decades with virtually no side effects) and piracetam
  • Huperzine A
  • Gota Kola
  • Panax Ginseng
  • Alpha GPC (1200mg initially)
  • Acetyl L Carnitine
  • Cordyceps Mushroom Extract
  • Phosphatidylcholine
  • Good quality extra virgin Olive Oil (oleic acid)

Astrology is a system that looks at cycles of life using the language of planets. It’s about planetary energies that influence our personal personalities, temperament, challenges and strengths.

The practice of astrology has been around in various forms for thousands of years. The New Age movement of the 1960s and ’70s launched the New Age as the “Age of Aquarius”—the 2,000-year period after the Earth is said to move into the Aquarius sign.

People especially turn to spirituality and astrology during stress. Millennials and Gen Xers have been significantly more stressed than previous generations since 2012 and are embracing astrology with a huge hug.

Dr. Berkson met Alan Oken at a Holy Man Jam, where spiritual leaders converged to discuss the consciousness of planet earth.

Alan Oken was the Director of The Wisdom School (Santa Fe, NM), is co-founder of the Australian Institute for the Development of Consciousness and was Director of Esoteric Studies in Lisbon.

Alan is the author of a dozen titles, including Soul-Centered Astrology, Rulers of the Horoscope, and Alan Oken’s Complete Astrology.

In this personal yet general dialogue, you will learn:

  • Forecasting for 2020
  • Millennials
  • The New Spirituality
  • Which generation that will come forward to promote international peace.

Health food tends to run in trends. At the moment coconut is king. But just as we live in a material world with two sides to everything, it appears there may be a “shadow side” to coconut oil—for some patients.

You will learn Dr. Berkson’s conclusions from first hearing this at an A4M Anti-aging Gastroenterology module she was both a professor and student at, along with “sleuthing’ the science.

In this show you will learn:

  • What is intestinal permeability and why is “Goldilocks” just right permeability critical.
  • What is coconut fat and how is this saturated fat very different from animal saturated fat.
  • What is LPS and endotoxins.
  • How to test for LPS and which labs do it.
  • How different oils effect this.
  • How different oils effect how we absorb sugar from food.
  • Who should be very moderate if not avoid coconut oil and who doesn’t need to.
  • What might coconut oil do to the gut wall and what are the studies suggesting this.
  • What might coconut oil to the colonic microbiome and what are the studies suggesting this.
  • Where is the Department of Nutrition that 1st published a pig and now a human study looking at every hour, up to five hour, blood levels of endotoxins, after consuming coconut oil.
  • This does not reflect food.
  • This probably does not reflect MTC oils.
  • The gut and gut wall benefit of spore probiotics.
  • The role of dietary fats and fatty liver.

This show is in honor of two amazing scientists that helped the world recognize the human threat of endocrine disrupting environmental chemicals.

Dr. Elizabeth (Buzzy) A. Guillet PhD and Dr. Louis Joseph Guillet PhD—lovers, married for decades, visionaries, scientists—and amazing! Both have been Dr. Berkson’s heroes and colleagues for many years.

Dr. “Buzzy” Guillett was the anthropologist who first took a look at what endocrine disruptors (environmental pollutants that mimic hormones) were doing to our children’s brains and our daughters breasts. Dr. Guillet and her husband, Dr. Lou Guillett, were instrumental in putting endocrine disruption on the scientific world’s radar.

They were the definition of the original power couple. This show honors both and is an amazing interview with Dr. Buzzy Guillet about their work.

Dr. Berkson worked with them at the Center For Bioenvironmental Research at Tulane and interviewed them for Hormone Deception (available on Amazon second edition) over 25 years ago.

Dr. Lou sadly passed a few years ago from lymphoma. Many think this was due to all his years of work in the dirty waters of Lake Apopka in Florida where he did original alligator research. Dr. Louis Guillett was an active man, not averse to actual wrestling with reptiles to take blood samples or measure penile lengths!

Dr. Lou demonstrated that the alligators were getting feminized due to endocrine disruptors in the water. Now the lake has been cleaned and the male alligators are manly again, much due to Dr. Lou’s efforts.

Dr. Louis Joseph Guillette junior was professor at the Medical University of South Carolina’s obstetrics and gynecology department in Charleston. He worked alongside Ana Soto, Frederick vom Saal and Theo Colborn, when endocrine disruption was a radical and unproven hypothesis.

One of his most notable quotes was when Dr. Lou told a US House of Representatives Subcommittee on Health and the Environment in 1993 about sperm counts: “Every man sitting in this room today is half the man his grandfather was. And the question is: are our children going to be just half the men we are?” This quote lives on and Dr. Buzzy is part of carrying on the investigation and pursuit of awareness and answers.

Dr. Buzzy was a professor at the University of Florida. Dr. Buzzy spent years in Mexico studying the effects of pesticides on children’s thinking, brain development, hand-eye coordination, IQ and breast development.

I always thought Dr. Lou looked like a “he-man” that just stepped out of an Irish spring commercial. And I always looked toward their relationship and amazing contributions with a huge heart of admiration.

In this show you will learn:

  • How pesticides can adversely affect your children and what to do about them.
  • How Dr. G’s Mexico experiments demonstrated pesticides adverse effects on children’s brain development.
  • How Dr. Buzzy tracked the children and effects of pesticides in food and in bug sprays, for many years.
  • Why many of today’s young boys are being feminized, even having early fat pads similar to older women.
  • How endocrine disruptors are effecting puberty timing.
  • How our dirty planet is effecting our kid’s IQ and what this means for their future and humanity’s future.
  • What we can do to protect ourselves.
  • Which foods have the most endocrine disruptors to avoid.
  • How she and Lou got into all this and stayed together as an amazing couple for many years.
  • And much more.

This is a must not miss show as endocrine disruptors have been called “the third major threat to humanity’ after nuclear war and global warming! And Dr. Buzzy Guillet helped scientists and humanity understand all this.

Dr. Berkson speaks on the “re-analysis” of the Women’s Health Initiative—a 19-year follow-up— presented at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium on December 13, 2019.

(* See abstract below for details).

In this show, estrogen gets a “reframe”.

You learn:

How estrogen protects against breast cancer incidence

How estrogen protects against all-cause mortality (death from all causes).

How estrogen protects many tissues, especially our energy organelles: mitochondria.

You learn how best to take estrogen therapy, optimal timing of initiation, benefits, and theories as to why estrogen is breast cancer protective more than breast cancer dangerous.

Did you know estrogen has been historically used to treat breast cancer!

Dr. Rowan T. Chlebowski is the principal investigator in this new re-analysis. Asked if this new data should influence current guidelines on menopausal hormone therapy? Dr. Chlebowski says, "Yes, I would hope so!”

Dr. Berkson will be writing a blog on “Estrogen Vindicated” that you can soon find at drlindseyberkson.com in the blog section.

Don’t miss out on the most potent anti-aging tools we have: hormones. And one of the most breast, brain and life protective… is estrogen. God bless her!

Go to https://drlindseyberkson.com/bigger-belly-fat-smaller-brain-size-shocking-link-mindfulness-15-sophisticated-action-steps/ for an in-depth article on this topic.

When it’s fat or real estate, it’s all about location, location, location!

Where your fat is located on your body, affects your overall health, your brain structure and function, and even your ability to be mindful… or not.

In this show you learn plenty of facts and fiction about fat cells.

Fat has more functions than we thought.

  • Fat stores excess calories so you can mobilize the fat stores for energy when you need them.
  • Fat releases hormones that control metabolism (metabolism refers to how you burn calories as energy, or store calories as fat).
  • Fat protects organs.
  • Fat acts like Jekyll and Hyde depending on where it lives, what type of fat it is and how many of them are there.
  • Hormone altering chemicals love fat.  Pollutants that mascaraed as hormones, can hide inside fats cells making them act physiologically nasty. Dr. Bruce Blumberg has labeled these endocrine disruptors that especially make for unhealthy fat cells, obesogens.

Fat cares about location.

Not all fat is created equal. Where your fat “lives” modifies it’s function.

  • Visceral fat lives inside your gut surrounding your organs.
  • Subcutaneous fat lies under your skin.

Mounting evidence shows that fat lying deep within the abdomen is more perilous than the fat you can pinch with your fingers on your underarm, inner thigh and even on your belly just under your skin.

Fat that lives right underneath your skin, that feels relatively soft and that you can pinch between your fingers, is called subcutaneous fat.

In a healthy person, you should have a bit of fat under your skin that makes up a bout 90% of your fat stores.

The remaining 10% — called visceral or intra-abdominal fat —lies outside of your easy reach, beneath your firm abdominal wall. This fat fills the spaces surrounding abdominal organs like your liver, intestines, spleen and others. Visceral fact can also be found inside your omentum. This is an apron-like flap of tissue that lies under the belly muscles and blankets the intestines. The omentum gets harder and thicker as it fills with fat.

As women approach middle years, their proportion of fat to body weight increases often more than this happens in males.  Their belly enlarges. Fat storage starts to thicken the torso, fill up under the armpits, and thicken the waist, especially in the back.

Even if you don't actually gain weight, your waistline can grow by inches as visceral fat pushes out against the abdominal wall.

Fat is biologically active. It releases hormones that affect our health.

Subcutaneous fat releases healthy hormones.

  1. Subcutaneous fat releases the hormone leptin. When leptin is released in optimal amounts, it acts on the brain to suppress appetite (to help you not over eat) and even helps burn stored fat throughout the body so you don’t get fat.
  2. Subcutaneous fat also releases adiponectin. Adiponectin protects the body against diabetes and heart disease by regulating how the body processes fats and sugars. Adiponectin also is a powerful anti-inflammatory molecule, especially protecting the linings of blood vessels.
    • Adiponectin is made a bit by visceral fat, too, as long as there isn’t too much of it. But adiponectin production falls severely as visceral fat volume increases.
    • As people become fatter, they make less adiponectin. This increases their risk of diabetes, heart disease, dementia and the list keeps growing.

Visceral fat cells, in comparison, secrete unhealthy molecules and hormones.

  1. Visceral produces proteins called cytokines. These can trigger and maintain low-levels of unhealthy inflammation. Excessive inflammation is an independent risk factor for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, dementias and other serious chronic conditions.
  2. Visceral fat also produces a precursor to angiotensin, a protein that causes blood vessels to constrict, blood pressure to rise, and increases the risk of stroke.
  3. Visceral fat sets the scene for insulin resistance, another risk factor for many diseases as well as symptoms like fatigue, insomnia, out of control hunger and brain fog.

How to tell if you have too much bad visceral fat?

  • If you have a pot belly you most like have excess visceral fat.
  • If you gut protrudes past your breasts.
  • If a woman’s waist is over 35 inches.
  • If a man’s wait is over 40 inches.

Your belly/your brain.

One study followed 6,500 members of Kaiser Permanente of Northern California, a large HMO (health maintenance organization), for an average of 36 years, from the time they were in their 40s until they were in their 70s. They tracked who got dementia, and compared this to their belly fat.

Those with the biggest bellies had the higher risk of dementia compared to people with smaller bellies. The link was true even for people with excess belly fat but overall of normal weight.

How does belly fat cause brain damage?

  1. Leptin: Excess belly fat can cause leptin malfunction. This can cause issues with cognition, memory and hunger control.
  2. RBP4: Researchers at Harvard have discovered that, compared with subcutaneous fat, visceral fat secretes larger amounts of retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4). Excesses of this molecule increase insulin resistance. As the volume of visceral fat increases, so do levels of RBP4.
  • This connection is so predictable, researchers are developing a blood test for RBP4 as a way for physicians to accurately measure an individual's amount of visceral fat.

Belly fat can be confusing. It can be both visceral and subcutaneous. It’s not easy to know exactly how much of your gut fat is killing your brain and your future. At the moment, the only way to determine which of your belly fat is subcutaneous or visceral, is by CT scan. This is expensive. And creates huge radiation exposure .So the test of RBP4  mentioned above, is promising, but not yet available

Did you know there are 3 types of fat cells: white, brown and brite (beige).

  1. White fat. This is stored energy. When you cut calories, you tend to loose white fat cells. When you add more exercise expenditure to smaller portions, you tend to loose more white fat cells. Most of visceral fat is white fat cells.
  2. Brown fat. Brown fat is now thought to be more like muscle than like white fat. When activated, brown fat burns white fat. Brown adipose tissue contributes to your body’s core temperature maintenance through a process called non-shivering thermogenesis. Lean people have more brown fat and more non-shivering thermogenesis. Children have more brown fat than adults and it helps keep them warm. Cold weather promotes brown fat synthesis. Studies show that in Boston in the wintertime, brown fat is more active, and this stimulates metabolism and burning of calories.
  3. Brite (beige fat) is brow fat marbled within white fat. Brite fat regulates energy expenditure and fights against obesity.

Interchangeable:

White fat can turn beige. Beige fat can revert back to white fat. Conversion factors depend upon how you eat, move and the balance of all your hormone family members. For example, underactive thyroid or testosterone can be tamping down your metabolism and play a role into your types of fat cells.

  • Obesity = occurs when you have more white fat than the other types of fat, from consuming more energy than you use, or having unhealthy hormones and nutrient status (hormone depend on nutrients to keep you health).
  • You can fight obesity = by eating less, moving more, and eating more fishmeals or taking essential fatty acid fish supplements.
  • Why? Fish oil helps you make more brown and brite fat, which ups your ability to burn calories.

The “Browning of White Fat” (white fat turning beige).

Exercise promotes the release of an exercise hormone called Irisin. In 2012, Bruce Spiegelman, PhD, a cell biologist at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, dubbed this exercise hormone as "Irisin," after Iris, the Greek messenger goddess. Spiegelman said that exercise “signals” your body to maintain healthier weight.

You make the choice to exercise. As you exercise, your activated muscles produce and release irisin. Irisin promotes brown fat cell production within white fat cells. This is browning of white fat, by exercise through the middleman of irisin.

More browned white fat means your metabolism increase. You burn more calories. It’s less difficult to maintain a healthier weight.

Irisin has multiple benefits.

  • Promotes white fat browning.
  • Triggers neurogenesis (the growth of new neurons), especially within your brain.
  • Increases the expression of BDNF(brain-derived neurotrophic factor).
  • Activates genes involved in learning and memory.
  • Lengthens telomeres (tips of DNA). The longer your telomeres, the more you fight off disease, aging and premature death.
